Rusting wheels.

The steel wheels on my 2006 S are rusting badly, and though I have no worries about their integrity and strength, they look cr@p. The rear wheels are the worst, as this photograph shows. The other side is no better.



Purely by accident, I came across an advert from a local powder coating company and decided to contact them regarding cost. I received a quote by email today for £250 for all four wheels. This is a same day service. You leave the car with them. They give you a courtesy car (provided you are over 21, which I am in Spades), and you pick the finished car up later in the day.
My wife said to me this afternoon that she would pay to have it done as a birthday present if I wished.

But here comes the rub. What colour do I opt for? I could go for black again or even silver, to look like a set of alloys but I was thinking of a colour to coordinate with the Vivid Blue Pearl. Perhaps a light metallic blue.

Originally it had silver plastic wheel trims. I could just refit the trims but they are a harbour for dirt.

I agree, we used to use wheel trims on our winter steel wheels, but the only place the rims rusted was where the wheel trims touched the rim, so a coat of smooth black hammerite and no wheel trims and the wheels are great.

Jocko, that is expensive. When I purchased our Jazz last year the alloys were kerbed, corroded and basically shot. Got a quote for stripping, repairing and powder coating including removing and refitting the tyres, new valves and balancing the wheels all in for £165, all done in a day.
Here is the result.

They did a great job, a small company called Kings Industry near Bolton, specialising in powder coating everything from car parts to garden furniture.

I would be at those with a rattle can after some proper prep work. You might not have the time or what have you to do so however. Just my opinon,  but I certainly wouldn't be spending a fair part of the cars value on a relatively minor cosmetic point. Given the year of the car, and the wheel arch condition, I wouldn't be worried.

If you have the wheel trims, pop those back on to take the eye off the problem!

I think I like culzean's idea of a rub down and a tin of paint... FWIW, Wilko's do a great matt and satin black metal paint, I love the stuff and use it for all sorts of outdoor things, including touching up bits of bodywork.

Spend the rest on fettling the wheelarches!

+1 for Wilko paint. Excellent quality and prices. Much better than anything else at the same price.

I concur. The rusty wheels are not going to cause you problems, but the rusty arches will given time. Youd be advised to remove your arch liners to see what they look like inside.

I had my Volvo alloys done for £220.



However, when I asked the same company for a price for the steel wheels, they wanted £350.
If I spend £250 on wheels, I do not want black wheels as I could buy black wheels. Oponeo doesn't do wheels for my Jazz. My Tyres quoted £276. Then I would have to pay to have the tyres swapped over and balancing and valves.

The wheel arch is solid, and the first warm spell I intend getting it rubbed down and primed. The arch liner does not go near the edge of the arch on my model. Hence the build-up of mud which started the rust.

The wheels really need sandblasting. I do not have the energy (or the knees and hips) to remove the wheels, wire brush them and spray the rims.

These are nearly all trim, so you wouldnt see the rusty wheel lurking behind.
