Finding doors unlocked
« on: October 16, 2020, 10:39:16 PM »
Couple of times I have arrived at my EX and found it unlocked. Now being more careful and, again, twice the doors have locked and then a couple of seconds later the car unlocked.
Anybody had similar experiences?

There is a couple of possibilities, one of the doors or tailgate not fully shut or key fob left in the car.

I always do two taps (for deadlocking) on the ribbed bit on the top of the door handle and then check that the mirrors have folded. For me they are a good indicator that the vehicle is locked so if the mirrors don't fold then that tells me that the vehicle won't lock for some reason. Page 171 of the online version of the handbook explains more about the lock operation and notes that if the front door handles are gripped more than two seconds after locking then the doors will open again.

Please don't think I am taking the mickey, but how do you know they are unlocked? Are you trying the handle? Because that will unlock it. The first time I rented a car with keyless entry, I couldn't stop instinctively trying the handle to check it was locked and obviously I was just unlocking it again. So I walked a distance away and asked my son to check it was locked and that worked.

Of course if you really want to check, you need to do what I do to this day on my Toyota. Which is, test the rear door handle, as that does not unlock the car.

Sorry if this is all obvious to you but it wasn't to me in 2014 with a hire car in Miami, programmed in Spanish and with no instructions or briefing from the hire car company.

Well that is standard behaviour for normal car with central locking from a pushbutton keyfob when one of the doors or tailgate is not closed properly, the car will open shortly after being locked and the indicators flash as the car unlocks.  If you car has keyless entry then the explanation from Richard Frost may well be the answer.
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

Yup..
When I lock the door the mirrors fold in. I walk away... When I come back the mirrors are out and doors open. Clue is in the side mirrors!
If you leave a key in the car you get a BEEP and the door won't lock. I have walked away from the car and seen it open a few seconds later. Possibly a trip to the garage. Difficult to recreate.

I'm assuming this is keyless. When you walk away does your route take you directly away.

I had a keyless loaner once and the office layout to carpark meant every time I went to the kitchen with the keyfob in my pocket the car unlocked as I could see the hazard lights flash.
Let's be careful out there!

As per page 170 of the owners manual, if the car is unlocked and a door is not opened, then it should re-lock after a short period, so you should not be able to find the car unlocked even if you accidently re-pressed the remote following locking it.
