I remember, years ago, reading that no matter what car you buy they all have roughly the same 'bits' that need to be fitted at the factory. The only difference is size.

A small car car presumably takes just as long to build as a large car and only a fraction more metal.

Pricing was therefore not equal to R&D, parts and build.

Is the new Jazz expensive, each will make up their own mind.
Let's be careful out there !

You are correct, the 'premium' brands just make more profit for the maker ( and from the stats are a lot more unreliable ) - the small and medium car sector is very competitive and pennies count when you are making millions of cars.

Production volume is another key difference because the initial costs of design and tooling are very high. So high volume is essential if you want a cheap car.  What price exclusivity?

I don't think the price of Jazz is expensive considering you get a hybrid system, Honda reliability, and a great car. I am at a point now where I don't want to burn my money on a car now, nor do I want to impress someone with my car. The Jazz CrossStar seems perfect - the regular Jazz's suspension is too shallow to give you a comfortable ride in my opinion.

Did you mean a more comfortable ride?

Yes, the extra 18 mm that the CrossStar has makes a world of a difference.

I think I prefer the look of the CrossStar and if it's got softer suspension then I think that is test drive #1 next year.
Let's be careful out there !

Well I am having an argument with myself now over whether I want to go for a Jazz sized car or stay with something the same size as I have. I am comfortable I can do without 4WD through sensible tyre choice but I do value the increased ride height, since it is very good for my back and also for driving around the country lanes I use every day - both in terms of visibility and capability to get off the road when passing in tight spots or parking in remote locations.

So, given the only issues with my current car are it is now in it's fifth year, it is realistically only capable of around 40mpg, and it 'felt too big these days', and given otherwise it has every feature I would want from a replacement, and it is already set up with Nokian All Season tyres all round, I have decided to wait another six months and resume looking in the Spring. By then there should also be a wealth of nearly new Jazzes to choose from.

Thanks for all the input folks.

MPG only really matters if you cover a lot of miles,  that is why I was always saddened to see a lot of diesels on the school runs,  and everybody knew that Nox was much worse for human health than CO2  - yup those parents really loved their kids.

A car is always going to be a depreciating asset,  and the newer they are the steeper the depreciation curve.   This is even worse with BEV,  which is good news for secondhand buyers, but bad news for early adopters.

Probably the wise decision on balance, current vehicle sounds perfectly set up for the winter driving season and not costing a fortune to run. Reliability should be a given being Toyota. Keep an eye on the market and values and spend winter evenings doing more research.

Another reason for waiting - don't expect to be doing much driving over the next few months anyway!

Someone I know has committed to our Clean Air group to finish the year on the same tankful of fuel he got in February!

There's a good selection of ex-demonstrators or similar at the Honda Used Cars https://usedcars.honda.co.uk/en/used-cars/approved-cars/all-brands/all-models?country=gb&unitSystem=imperial&currency=GBP&currentSearch=honda&manufacturer=21&price_type_switch=price&reg_date_from=2020&model=2139&zip=W10&radius=5000&warrantyProgram=22&sort=price:ASC#result-tools-top . Currently the cheapest Crosstar is £20,950. If you get one that's less than 6 months since registration then it's possible to add Honda's 5 year service plan which, I reckon, is good value. It may be worthwhile keeping an eye on what's available once next year arrives as dealers may be keen to offload some vehicles prior to the new registration year.
Previously 2025 Jazz Advance, previously 2022 HR-V Elegance, previously 2020 Jazz Crosstar

Given the reported downturn in car sales I'd have expected some decent discount for any serious buyer.

The number of times I've headed for the door only to be called back and another deal to be presented.

I was surprised to read about the recent price rise, surely that can't help.

Honda have a habit of increasing prices on 1st April and 1st October immediately after the reg number change.

I just got a 'loyalty' discount offer from our local dealer offering a massive £250 deposit contribution (we usually buy our cars cash) and free servicing on new Jazz.

I've told them multiple times it's unlikely we'll be buying another Honda and even f we did, it won't be from them.  Which makes life tricky as there's no other Honda dealer within realistic reach now.
