How to do the CVT gearbox oil change on a MK II?
« on: September 01, 2020, 11:33:14 AM »
Just before I duff it up, to do the CVT gearbox oil change on a MK II it's drain the oil via sump plug(loosen with 3/8" ratchet), top up, start the engine and move through all gears pausing for 3 sec in each. Run engine till warm, check level 60 sec after switch off and before 90sec, it must be between the upper and lower HOT side of the dip stick.

Does the above sound right?

I have seen someone mention you can jack the vehicle on the right side to drain a bit extra, which would be a good option seeing they only sell 4L bottles of the CVT oil and a standard drain is only 3.4L or thereabouts so it would be nice to be able to put all the fresh oil in.

The full gearbox holds over 6L. The scheduled oil change is a partial one only..which is why it is every 25k miles..You can only extract roughly 3L by draining.

Have you done the cvt oil on the mk II before, does my method outlined in the op sound good?

I did this today and it's easy enough, barring when the oil missed the catch can and went all over the floor :(

I thought that was the way you were meant to change oil?

It is, except when you go round to your sisters fancy home to use their garage to do the job, spill oil all over the floor and then in addition proceed to walk to the bin round the corner carrying the oil soaked piece of cardboard that was supposed catch a few droplets .... And drip oil all the way to the bin.

Then spend another hour or 2 trying to clean up the mess.. luckily it's gearbox oil so relatively clean, the stains should fade :D

Once the fluid is drained you fill up with around 3L, start the engine and go through all the gears, shut off the engine , wait 60sec and check the level, you'll might need to top up with another 200-300ml.

I went to a petrol station and parked next to a pump and checked the level, they normally make that area near dead level to ensure the vehicle can be correctly pumped with fuel.
