CVT - how to get the best out of them and tips and tricks?
« on: August 23, 2020, 07:48:42 PM »
I recently got a 1.3 Gen 2 CVT, it's my first vehicle with an automatic.

What kind of things must you keep in mind and how do you get the best out of a CVT?
Any tips and tricks?

Sorry I meant to ask this question here but posted it on another thread by mistake:

The Gen 2 CVT has a torque converter not a clutch so one big question I have is it necessary to switch into neutral when stopped at traffic lights, some people say no it won't damage or wear out the torque converter?

And in a similar vein is it safe to creep along in Drive when in bumper to bumper traffic?

I understand to change into Reverse or Park I must be at a standstill but can I change into neutral from Drive whilst still moving and for that matter at any speed?
And likewise can I change from D to S and back again whilst still moving and at speed?

Putting the car in 'N' when stopped for any length of time is OK, It is something that I always do.
You can select 'N' while on the move but why would you want to?
You can shift from 'D' to 'S' or 'S' to 'D' while on the move, if you couldn't you would not be able to make the best use of the 'S' facility.
If you don't stay in 'D' while in bumper to bumper traffic how will you make progress?
The purpose of the 'S' mode is to enhance the performance. I use it a lot, for example when pulling out into traffic at a junction; when overtaking; when joining busy roundabouts etc. Don't be afraid to let the engine reach the higher rev range, 6000rpm, you will not damage it. You will surprise the drivers of other cars at the improved acceleration.

Vic.
