Door 'Keeps'
« on: August 21, 2020, 02:48:45 PM »
An unusual fault on my Mk2 Jazz. The drivers door 'keeps', that mechanism that holds the door open, has failed, there is no resistance to opening or closing the door.
I assume that there is something inside the hinge edge of the door that the retaining bar passes through.
Any ideas anyone?

Door check strap - there's a sprung roller in the mechanism in the door, either the spring's broken or the mechanism has dropped to bits.

Usually, you replace the whole thing, in Honda parts terminology it's listed as a "checker complete", driver's side front door part number is 72340-SAA-J01. They are handed, obviously.

You might be able to find a secondhand one, but the driver's side is most in demand as it's usually the first one to fail.

Looks like you will have to remove the door inner to access the plate that mounts the spring loaded rollers though. for some reason Honda put the clearance holes in the door and the threads in the plate - not the best design ever...   A larger hole in the door and a couple of weld or clinch nuts in the door rather than the mechanism mounting plate would have meant it could have been replaced from the outside of the door.

I usually keep a bit of lubrication on both the hinge on A pillar and the plastic piece that runs between A pillar and the door to keep things running smoothly and ( touch wood ) have never had one fail.

Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

Part ordered last Friday, despatched Tuesday, the carrier is Hermes, I am still waiting for delivery regardless of what it says on Hermes emails.

Generally 2-3 days with Hermes standard service, and they do turn up on Sat/Sun too!

The part from Lings arrived this morning 24hrs after Hermes said it would. Delivered by a guy in a private car in a box marked as coming from UPS, perhaps Lings use both.
I know some parcel delivery firms use private individuals, often semi-retired, who use their everyday transport.
I'll get my son to fit it when he comes back off holiday, he has removed the door cards before when he replaced my door mirrors, the rest is just bolts.

Most, if not all, Hermes 'local' couriers are self-employed and use their own transport, fuel and other expenses, paid a small fee per parcel delivery. I think DPD also do a cheaper service using a similar setup.

Good luck with the job, shouldn't be too bad.

It's having the right tool/s to get the door card off. You need a Philips driver for a couple of screws but you need a  proper tool for easing the door card clips off without breaking them.

Indeed. I made a clip fork tool years ago, it's served me well over the years. A box of spare clips is handy too, as they do get brittle with age. Don't we all!
