Hi
I'm writing about my girlfriend's car, but figured I could use some advice. The car has a few problems and just wanted to sound out the idea of "run it till it dies" or if it's worth putting cash into.
It's a 2003 CVT Honda Jazz 1.4. Nice car overall, a few minor scuffs (where a previous owner lost a fight with the side of a lamp-post) but what can I say, she likes her car.
There are a few issues to deal with right now. Firstly the exhaust back-box needs replacement (I'd guess around £80 tops to do). It could definitely use a service but I'm happy to do so myself.
The most prominent thing right now is that it does seem to be exhibiting the clutch judder that appears to be pretty well known. I'm going to guess that there has never been any remedial action as she's only had the car since January. So my questions are:
- Is it really at all likely that changing the transmission fluid will help? I ask as it doesn't seem to be a job I can do myself as it needs to be at operating temp and all that business (unless I'm wrong?)
- If it is indeed the starter clutch, how much generally will she expect it will cost at a standard indie garage? I've seen prices between £400-800 quid. I'm based in Hertfordshire if that helps.
- Is it at all likely that the starter clutch will fail entirely if it's exhibiting judder? As in, given that it does experience the judder is it a reasonable indication that sudden death is near and it needs dealing with asap, or is it something that will happen forever and a day generally and that's all it will do?
We are basically in the process of deciding how much cash to put into it and this to me is the most important bit.
EDIT: Just noted the thread about changing the fluid myself. Doesn't appear that hard so willing to do it myself.
