Winter tyres from 2007 Jazz S to 2014 Jazz 1.4 ES Plus
« on: February 06, 2015, 09:33:53 PM »
Being a frequent driver on snowy, icy roads, I have equipped my 2007 Jazz S with an alternative set of steel wheels and winter tyres 175/65R14. I am about to trade this car for a 2014 Jazz 1.4 ES Plus, tyre specification 185/55R16. The dealer assures me that the wheels with the winter tyres can be used on the new car. Is he right?

The wheels will fit,  but rolling radius is different (smaller ) than the correct tyres - so your speedo will show a bit faster speed than you are actually doing.   If the wheels clear the brake calipers on ES Plus you may be OK.   Only thing is the 175/65R14 size will not be stated on the tyre information sticker on inside of drivers side door opening - so not considered by Honda to be a suitable size for that Jazz,  but if dealer says Yes I would check with Honda UK technical department as well.

Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

Old model discs were 258mm, new model 262mm. New model comes with either 15 or 16 wheels, so even allowing for the 2.4cm less of the 14 inch wheels, they should clear the discs with no problem. I cannot see that the calipers will be much different between models?
Get the dealer to swap the wheels before you take delivery and confirm they are ok.

I've agreed with the dealer that before I take delivery of the car I am buying, we will try it with the winter tyres from the car I am trading in - which will have had its summer tyres put back on by then.

Would I be right in thinking that, given that my speed will be overstated when running with the winter tyres from the old car on the new one, so too will the odometer reading? It will be more difficult  to live with that, I think, than with a slightly exaggerated speed display. Or is mileage measured in some other way?

Thanks to you both for your help.

A pity I did not catch the 1.4SE while it still had 15 inch wheels. 175/65R14s like mine were the recommended winter tyres if you had 185/55R15 wide-profile summer wheels, with the resulting wheel plus tyre diameter more or less identical on the two combinations of contrasting wheel and tyre sizes. Not all change is for the better, I think.
