Why with my 23reg Crosstar does "brake hold" not work if you're in reverse?

I think it is for safety reasons. Imagine you back up a bit, and after a while you would press the accelerator expecting to go forward instead of backward. And most people only do short reverse actions without the need for brake hold. If might even work against you, slowly backing up is much easier using the brake pedal than using the accelerator.

Because that is not what it is designed for, see the Owner's Manual information, selecting reverse cancels brake hold.
