New bosch pads and discs still squeaking when braking!
« on: February 07, 2026, 02:36:09 PM »
Hello all. I'm at loss. Car initially had brembo brakes and original discs and they were making a loud squeak, almost like a lorry coming to a stop. Mechanic recommended changing brake pads and discs and I got bosch brake pads and discs, changed front and back. Initially they were fine, but after about 200 miles since the new brake pads and discs, the squeak has returned. Any advise please on what to do, do I leave them for a few miles and hopefully the squeak will stop? I have a Honda jazz 2006 auto if it helps, only done 70k miles.

Could it be surface rust on the brake discs?  Even brand new discs can  form light surface rust  when parked in the current very damp weather  .As quickly as just overnight.    This rusting normally clears quite quickly once the brakes are applied a few times on the move. They  may make a sort of brushing noise until they clear.    If a car is not driven  for longer  periods the rusting can become more severe and  make a more distinctive grinding noise.

I suggest taking the car somewhere safe and apply the brakes  quite a few times  much harder than you would normally do.  This would not only clear any rust, but also help the new pads to fully bed in to the discs.   (even without squeals  brand new discs and pads  are not always 100% effective until they have worn slightly to exactly match each other.

If surface rust is not the cause and  there is no improvement  it probably best to get the car checked by a brake specialist.
My IQ test came back negative

Hello and many thanks. I've tried going around and applying brakes a few times, with no luck. The brakes were only installed last week, but the sound is horrendous. Could this be due to aftermarket brakes, wondering what brakes everyone else uses? Anyone else using bosch brake pads? Do they squeak as well?

Going back years ........ there used to be anti-squeal shims.

Do they still do them ?

Not changed pads for decades
Let's be careful out there !

When I replaced the front pads and discs a few year ago, I reused all the shims.  One of the ears had also broken off due to corrosion.

I recall one of the shim types didn't fit the new Pagid front pads very well, because the backing plate of the Pagids had 45 degree chamfered edges, but I used the original shims anyway.

No brake squeal after 5 years  (4-5k miles) of use.  Car sold last month with 21k miles on odometer.

I used Brembo pads on rears for 4 years - these don't have 45 degree chamfered edges so original shims fitted.

Neither the Pagid or Brembo pads came with new shims.  I can't remember whether Pagid and Brembo even sell them.  Honda don't sell the shims separately.

Hmm many thanks. So the mechanic should have a look at the shims, I'll certainly ask him. Wondering if anyone on here has any experience with bosch brake pads as I thought they would be better than brembo?. I'm at loss as initially when brakes were replaced there was no squeak and it just came back after a few miles. The mechanic is also going to change the front caliper as its been there for years but not sure if this could be the issue as well?

fwiw, I posted my brakes replacement threads here
https://clubjazz.org/forum/index.php?topic=17924.0

I'm sure I made a comment about the shims not fitting the Pagid front pads properly in a post, but can't see it.

I've found the photo I took comparing Pagid front to the worn Honda OEM pads.

Thank you, so it appears the original brakes have a somewhat different shape from the original ones. I'm thinking might be forced to get original brakes, if my mechanic can't sort it out. He was talking about applying brake anti squeak fluid, but not sure if that's going to a  long term fix. Just surprised though that no comments of anyone having used bosch.

fwiw, I notice on EuroCarParts website, they offer Bosch pads only for the front axle.

Given the age of the car, most owners probably opt for the 'cheapest' brake pads, and/or choose a single brand if replacing pads on both axles?

I recall buying a Bosch cabin pollen filter for my Jazz for less than a tenner. I wasn't impressed with the quality. It had so few flutes. When I replaced it a few years later, I bought cheapest ECP own brand filter and it looked as good Honda OEM filter.    I just searched ECP website and they only list one Mahle pollen filters at whopping 32 quid each for my former 2007 car  !??   ECP website must be broken?

It’s the materials in the pads since asbestos was removed a few years ago. If you want to stop the squeal get some EBC Ultimax pads. They actually do stop the noise

Just a quick update. The mechanic has said he's cleaned the brakes and discs with brake cleaner! I'm thinking was this not supposed to have been done when he initially changed the brakes and discs? How important is it to clean the brakes and discs with brake cleaner?

Simple answer is yes. Suggest you change your mechanic

In my experience, it's unusual for squeaking to come from the interaction between the pad face and the disc itself, and Bosch is a well respected manufacturer of both discs and pads, so I'd discount that for now.

Personally, I always fit the anti-rattle shims and smear some copper grease on both faces of the shim, to lubricate any high speed movement between the shim and the piston or between the shim and the back of the pad.

Another area to clean up and copper grease are the "ledges" in the caliper that the pads locate on and slide in, the grease tending to slow corrosion in that area and keep the pad movement free.

Just a thought, highly unlikely I know, but the Jazz pads use a small, springy "tang" of metal to rub against the disc and make a horrible squeaking noise when the pad has almost  worn down to nothing. It's a very simple, very effective way of letting you know that the pads need changing as the noise will drive you mad. Perhaps just check those on the pads?

The noise between pads and discs was quite common on civics a while ago even when shims were fitted.
When asbestos was removed from pads a few years ago slivers of metals were added to the pads. This is what causes the squealing. Hence  EBC Ultimax pads are organic and contain no added materials.
I went all through this with various civics
