Gearbox problem - hit reverse
« on: April 15, 2016, 07:12:59 PM »
Slowing down in medium speed traffic, shifted down from 5th to 4th - managed to hit reverse.
Never actually engaged but there was that embarrassing grinding of gears. :o
Now I thought there was a mechanical stop in the 'box to prevent this.
Honda dealer said this gate wasn't fitted to this model (1.4Si 2013) ad to be more careful when downshifting. >:(

Cobblers thought I - dealer doesn't want a warranty claim....

IMHO reverse won't actually engage while car is moving forward because 'baulk rings' (synchromesh) in gearbox cannot match the speed of the gears,  it is the projections on the synchro rings that make the 'grinding' noise.  Synchromesh never used to be fitted on reverse  but modern manual boxes will have it.

I wish makers would put reverse on the left of  first and second gear, where it is highly unlikely to be mistaken for 6th gear.

I used to get into trouble when driving wifes Jazz when I was used to 6 speed Civic box (position of reverse on Jazz is 6th on Civic) but have learned to concentrate more when swapping cars (and cogs).
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot
