Engine temp light when warm
« on: February 06, 2014, 08:01:01 PM »
Hello, I'm looking for a car and seen Jazz mk1 from 2002 with 85k miles done. It suppose to be first car for my wife hence we look for something cheap. That car has asking price 1150 pounds which is rather good for these cars. However, the owner who seems reasonable told me that the engine temp light comes on at times while you driving it. The car just passed an MOT and I found a notice about "coolant leakage" or something on the certificate. He said that its his wife's car for last 6 years and his garage quoted him 60 pounds to sort it out but he never found any time to do it. The car drives well otherwise. Should I walk away or is it something minor? Thank you a lot! Best regards everyone

Hi, if you're really considering this car the either I would tell him to have it repaired before you buy it or I would take a mechanic with you to confirm it will be only £60, if you're not careful you'll buy it and end up with a £500 bill.
If you have a bad feeling that something is not correct then yes, walk away.

It obviously could be a lot of things.
Does the overheat light come on when in traffic but not when on the open road? If so it could be a thermostat problem or a cooling fan problem or a blocked radiator if the car hasn't had the correct coolant in it.
If there is a coolant leak where is it coming from? It could be a leaking radiator or associated coolant hoses. If there is no visible leak but the coolant level goes down with use it could be a head gasket.
There are lot of questions to be asked of the seller in the hope that you get an honest answer.

Vic.

This is a real can of worms - coolant leakage noted on the MOT would probably be an external leak as they wouldn't know about it otherwise - (never had an MOT inspector look in the radiator cap or expansion bottle).  Without added colour antifreeze would be colourless,  the reason they put colour in anti-freeze is not to make it look pretty or to indicate what type it is (Glycol or OAT),  but to show up any leaks.

if it has developed an air lock in the cooling system because of the leak that can make the engine temperature light come on,  if the light comes on this time of year I would worry,  never saw the light on my GD come on even on the hottest day in traffic. The fan should come on long before the warning light, and it would be easily heard.  The one thing that I didn't like about the GD was the lack of temperature gauge, which would give early warning of developing problem, by the time the warning light comes on you already have a problem.

As VicW rightly says could be a hose (easy and cheap) the radiator (expensive) or it could be head gasket which would pressurise the system and blow coolant back past pressure cap into expansion bottle, blown gasket can also allow coolant into cylinder when engine not running,  look for excessive water vapour (steam) from tail pipe when starting engine.

point to watch on early GD models is rear brake pipes where the go into the drum, these are prone to corrosion after 6 to 7 years and Honda will charge over £200 to replace 2 short lengths of pipe,  this should have been picked up on MOT before now though.  If it has drum rear brakes it is a good thing, as rear discs are more trouble than they are worth.

Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

Gentelmen, your help is priceless. Thank you a lot!
Mr Culzean, I would appreciate any other tips on what to look at when seeing a potential car made around 2003-06. What mileage I should establish as a borderline?
