Scratched steering wheel
« on: January 16, 2026, 04:33:58 PM »
I recently noticed these nasty scratches on my steering wheel. I believe they're somehow caused by my wife's ring (though she only wears her wedding ring). Has anyone else had this issue and any suggestions on how to take the edges off these scratches?

Nasty scratches indeed! They seem to be at a regular distance that coincides with the stitching. Hmmm, I wonder if there is too much tension in the leather material itself.
When zooming in, you can see cracks along the entire material. Not looking good.
I do not know what to do with it, other than going to the dealer or to an upholstery professional.

Unfortunately I have no remedy :(

However, this kind of scratches might stem from an open zippered pocket  (unfortunately, I have the same scratches on my wheel)

This will happen more often the shorter the driver is and the closer they sit to the steering wheel.
(and of course: Have open zippers on their jacket pockets)

I have a few but nothing like that, yours to me look like splitting rather than
scratches, a number of years ago I knew a fella who was putting cream on his
hands for some reason and his wheel looked similar to yours, turned out it was
a reaction of the material on wheel to the cream, I suppose your hands could
sweat while holding the wheel, maybe your wife uses cream on her hands,
could even be a bad patch of materrial on your wheel, if you are still under
warranty go for a new wheel.
I forgot what I came to forget.

Not sure what model of Crosstar the OP is though it’s showing as a 2020 model
Is it a leather steering wheel or synthetic ?

From the advert "Who knows where you’ll go?"

Is this a heated steering wheel? Could this be the heater wires?

Or perhaps a capacitive sensor wire used to detect when you have both hands off the steering wheel.

A while back there were threads about what appeared to be a fairly thick and  shiny protective   coating peeling off in places. Limited I think to cars with the beige  interior trim option. (although the affected areas were black) Maybe an attempt by Honda for extra protection  , or just to enhance the contrast between the beige and dark areas of the wheel for stylistic reasons.    I think Honda replaced that wheel under warranty. th

I have no solution. Any attempt to fit a steering wheel cover might affect sensors or heated wheel .
My IQ test came back negative

I've caught our steering wheel with a nail that grows slightly sharply at one end. I think it was due to some accident I had and it grows back with a loose edge at one end which I need to trim back.

My impression is that you have to actively be steering (even by the slightest amounts) for the LKAS to be "satisfied" that you are still in control.

Mere presence of hands on the wheel isn't enough, so probably no(t only) capacitive sensors but monitoring of - even minute - wheel movements.

I agree with Coldstart. My recent 100 mile trial of LKAS on the A1 suggested that on a straight stretch it does not detect hands off. The detection is in the steering mechanism, not in the wheel.
