oil consumption

I do a fair mileage in my Jazz 1.4SE (350+ miles a week), change the oil twice a year (around May and September), and never have to top up oil between changes.

I use Castrol Magnatec 10W40 in Summer and 5W40 in Winter. As a personal preference I always add molyslip to oil as it helps with cold-start wear.

After telephoning Honda support I was advised to take the car for an oil pressure check. The garage then telephoned to say that a replacement short engine was to be fitted under warranty. I collected it today and I am told that the problem lay with the piston oil control rings. There are two rings, and apparently each has a notch or gap to facilitate fitting. These gaps must not be aligned or else oil can enter the combustion chamber. They were aligned in my engine which has been slowly burning oil. The work was carried out without charge and I have in the end been very impressed with the service. I believe that a repair could have been made without an entirely new short engine, but Honda's instructions were to change it.

My local Branch of Tesco supermarket are selling Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 at £16 for 4 litres, £7 pounds off usual price. Offer ends early  September

It may be worth checking Asda for the same, I notice they tend to shadow each other in such promotions

 as i said in another post "a friend mechanic changed an o-ring seal at the end of the camshaft".that o-ring was worn and oil was getting past it.now that the o-ring was changed i topped with oil and after aprox.1300 km about 500 grams of oil was missing. :(the engine is not burning oil for the exhaust smoke is not blue!does anybody have any suggestions?

narcis, do you live in a hot country - if you do you may need to use a slightly heavier oil, consult your handbook to see if any info there.

If you think oil is leaking you could try the old trick of putting clean sheet of paper under your engine when it is parked overnight in your garage (or cardboard weighted down with stones if the car is parked outside) - if there are any oil stains on in the morning, this should help localise the leak to a certain area of the engine.

i live in romania.hot summers and -25C winters.a few days ago i changed the oil to castrol magnatec 10w-40.until then i used mobil1 5w-40,and mobil1 5w-50.i'll let you know when a get to 1000km from the oil change how things developed with the magnatec.
i use the jazz as a taxi,mainly for short runs around town.does this have anything to do with oil consumption?
