Sat Nav Traffic Updates
« on: March 28, 2021, 01:33:24 PM »
Have owned my Crosstar for four days and I love it but the sat nav system doesn’t seem to be receiving traffic updates  :( Is it correct that it doesn’t receive traffic updates in the UK or am I doing something wrong?

I was under the impression you had to sign up for (and pay) for traffic updates.

Checked with the dealer last year, they checked with Honda UK who said no traffic service available in the UK currently, so you have to use Android Auto.

So no TMC RDS either, very surprising.

I do know that Garmin are having a major traffic change on 30th June when their DAB based Inrix traffic is being turned off and all that will be available is the inferior Smartlink traffic, via Smartphone, that is supplied by viaMichelin.

That is what my Satnav uses. I find it very good.

I'm posting from my experience about a decade ago before I switched to Garmin TA traffic via the cable aerial.

Unfortunately, down here in London, there are always lots of roadworks, which is relevent.

When I last used Smartlink it had a 200 incident buffer. When that buffer filled up you got no more new incidents. On quite a few occasions I joined the M25 at junction 10, clockwise, which Smartlink indicated was clear as it had no yellow or red traffic bars, only to be met with a solid jam.

When I looked further, and counted the incidents, it was always 200. I reckoned a lot to do with this was viaMichelin not removing obsolete roadworks as well. There was a 3 day barrier repair on the M4 that was still showing on viaMichelin 6 months after it finished.

Come 1st July and I have to switch to Smartlink I'm hoping it's improved. I did recently test it on my secondary Garmin and the first thing I noticed was that whilst the M4 smart motorway roadworks are clearly shown on my Garmin DS61 via cable traffic, my Garmin 2599 via Smartlink didn't show them, so I'm not hopeful.

If so, roll on my Jazz and I can use Google Maps via AA.
Let's be careful out there !

Yep, you can’t beat Apple maps on the display via CarPlay. No need to even consider anything else if you have an iPhone.

Iphone maps are good but I find google maps better, constantly updating as you go along according to the current traffic situation but, it's down to personal preference.  Also google maps came out top in a recent Auto Express review of map apps.

I remember in the early days of car play, when you could only use Apple Maps, then Google maps worked following a subsequent Apple iOS update. I much prefer using Google maps.
