I was minding my own business driving down a country lane when a strap on the back of the back of tractor coming the other way pinged loose and scored a direct hit on my 2013 1.4 petrol automatic Jazz's front fog light. It smashed the light and broke it's plastic frame. No other obvious damage.

The farmer agreed to pay for the repair and if I can get the parts it looks like a simple screwdriver job to detach the smashed fog lamp from the wiring, unscrewing the broken bits and screwing in the new bits. I'll also need a new plastic frame.

I'd rather avoid an insurance claim as my ins excess is £150 and it seems like any claim results in higher premiums the following renewal.

One weird thing though is that the LCD panel behind the steering wheel is no longer giving a temp output.
Is the external air temp sensor part of the front drivers side fog lamp?  Do I need to buy one of those are are they incorporated into the fog lamp i.e. do I need a Honda OEM part?

(If I have to make an insurance claim I will, but I'd rather keep it simple)

Welcome, Pete. I think you will find that the temperature sensor is mounted behind the front bumper. It may be damaged, but I would check that it is properly connected. Perhaps the shock caused the connector to detach.

cannot swear this is the correct one ( may be others on this site ),  but does not make sense to used different ones as it does same job on all cars.  The ambient air temp sensor also controls climate control / aircon IIRC.  Would not be part of foglamp ( but may be in same wiring loom ), but as Jocko says may have been unplugged by the shock.

Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

Yes, I did wonder about whether the outside air temp sensor would be an input to the cabin air con etc.

I switched the car on this AM and the external temp was reported as -40oC (it was about+10). Then after 5 mins it just became ---oC

Thanks for the link to https://japserviceparts.co.uk/ - bookmarked for current and future use. I was using eurocarparts but japserviceparts looks excellent for Honda bits.

Thanks, and bookmarked.

I found out why the outside temp sensor isn't giving a reading: The two wires leading to it (it's behind the radiator grill next to the fog lamp) were snapped off when the fog lamp was driven backwards by the impact. Its two thin wires that needs an auto electrician to reconnect to the temp sensor I think. Also it's very inaccessible unless the bumper is removed. Looking more and more like an insurance claim  :-[ .

I haven't done it myself but I believe it is easy enough to remove the bumper.

Looks like a dozen or more screws and clips to get off, and then a 2 man job to lift it off. I could probably manage that if I can rope in some help.
What's beyond my skill set (I've learnt my limitations!) is re-attaching the really thin wires to the temp sensor, I'd have to hire an auto electrician for that.
