Honda Jazz Mk4 2020 - / A recent European trip
« Last post by Beaver on May 18, 2024, 06:14:44 PM »
I took my Jazz off for a week or so driving through France, Germany and Belgium recently.  One or two observations on my trip...

Firstly, I set the speed limiter on as soon as I left le Shuttle. Big mistake in France!  As it's been a few years since I drove on the continent, I didn't recall that French motorway slip roads have speed limit signs of their own so cruising at a steady speed on passing an exit slip, the beeps started and the car wanted to slow down.  It only took a couple of these before I learned to switch the limiter off and not bother.  No problems with it in the other countries though.

The toll roads were a pain as I found it impossible to reach the ticket/payment machines (on the left of the car) through the window.  Stop, get out, trot round the car, take the ticket or pay by card, wave an apology to the impatient drivers behind while trotting back round to get in, seatbelt on, into gear and go before the barrier came down.

Headlights were an issue.  On page 198 of the manual it states "The headlights are suitable for left hand drive and right hand drive, without the need to make any adjustments or masking, as per UN-Regulation No.48 Dover Regulation".  As I left le Shuttle in the dark at 3am, I soon found that never in my driving life had I been flashed by so many lorry drivers for dazzling them!   The solution for me (one on board and very light, minimal luggage) was to lower the headlights to position 3 to avoid blinding oncoming traffic.  I only had one more night drive, and with setting 3 selected, at least I didn't dazzle anyone.

The knock on effect of this was that when driving with dipped beam, the lights didn't illuminate the road as far ahead as I would have preferred for unlit road night driving, so I had to reduce speed accordingly.  I don't usually exceed speed limits so it's not as if I'm a speed freak.  The beam pattern was clearly visible on the road and showed the standard UK pattern, with the high illumination on the left side of the beam pattern.

On the plus side, the clock re-set to European/UK time on leaving the train in both crossing directions.  The conversion to have the speedo e.t.c in kilometers rather than miles was easy and convenient.  The satnav was generally good (updated before I travelled) but tried to kill me twice by telling me to turn left into oncoming one-way traffic at junctions where the only legal option was a right turn.  It dropped out a few times and appeared to freeze, but stopping and re-programming the route sorted that out each time.

Overall, 1200 miles at 66mpg.

I have no problem using polarised sunglasses in my Mk 4.
The windscreen and door windows are clear of any 'tension' banding effects.  There is a little bit on the rear window when using the interior mirror but not enough to affect vision and the same on the front quarterlight windows, which I seldom look through anyway.

Digital driver display screen  fine, 9" touch screen fine .But the illuminated temperature and air distribution numbers and symbols which are normally white light  become a varying  spectrum of colours including quite dark blue.  But its still  visible, even allowing for some slight blurring, due to  me being a bit far sighted when glancing down from driving distance vision to a close up display.

The first post on this topic of brake failure was in January. We are now in May. Honda U.K. will have known about this problem even longer and have far more information than is reported on this forum. Honda E and other Honda models have the same issue. Judging from their behaviour so far, I wouldn’t hold one’s breath for a recall.

Off topic I know, our a/c packed up, apparently it's a leak at the condenser, Honda build quality isn't what it was.
I had the same thing on my Crosstar last summer, replaced under warranty but it took several months to get the part.
Same happened to my Jazz last summer. Took over two months for the replacement condenser to arrive so we endured the hottest part of the summer without air-con. This is my seventh Honda and definitely the most unreliable. I will be trading it in for a Kia very soon.
I jumped (out of Honda) before I was pushed. Reading the various fora, I saw that Honda reliability was not as it used to be. Although to be fair I have never had any problems with my 8 Hondas going back 23 years. Latterly, I haven't kept them long enough for anything to go wrong!
I swapped my CR-V Hybrid for a s/hand eNiro. Best car I have ever owned (out of 79)
7 year warranty and FREE 7 year connectivity.
It's only down side is that in spite of the 7 year warranty you only get ONE year breakdown. Perhaps Kia have more faith in their products than do al the manufacturers who only offer three years WITH 3 years breakdown, which you may well need!

On the Facebook Jazz eHEV Owners UK page, this has been discussed many times. There is a person who was in the process of buying a low mileage 23 Crosstar, but was concerned after reading about the brake failure. So much so, she asked the dealer. I quote from her post:

I did actually ask them about the brake sensor problem. It WILL be covered by Honda AND there WILL eventually be a recall issued but the retailer assured me that I would not be paying a fortune for a known problem. That said, I did take out the extended warranty and a service plan.

Was this in writing?  It was probably a salesman who she was speaking to. Would you really take that as Honda's position?

I can only quote her words as she wrote them. She has been asked by another member who the dealer was, but as yet she hasn't replied.

Using my Polaroid glasses, I paid extra attention to what I do and do not see clearly:
- central screen perfect
- screen right in front perfect
- all lit items (buttons etc.) good
- temperature adjust knob poor

That last one has a good work-around: also the center screen shows temperature when you turn the knob.
So Mk4 (and Civic ehev) are quite a good combination with Polaroids  :D

Honda Jazz Mk1 2002-2008 / Re: Insurance 2008 Mk1
« Last post by Lord Voltermore on May 17, 2024, 03:48:51 PM »
Quite a few insurance companies have  decided to no longer renew insurance on certain cars  , or certain drivers due to their age (young or old) or experience, or their postcode.   My insurers -Hastings direct,  insured my  Mk4 for the remaining time left on my existing policy but were unable to  offer a  quote for a renewal. I easily found competitive quotes  elsewhere  who were only too happy to accept me and my car. :-*

Incidentally  you may be asked if you have ever been refused insurance.  You havnt been refused personally.  ,  They  have just declined to offer quotes on certain classes of business  .

I can only suggest getting quotes from several  of the big on line comparison sites such as  go compare, compare the market, confused etc, and the other big car  insurers who market their product directly rather than on comparison sites.  Or a more individual broker such as Adrian Flux, who advertise on this forum ,especially if yours is a difficult case, modified car etc.

Honda Jazz Mk1 2002-2008 / Re: Additive for manual gearbox
« Last post by Lord Voltermore on May 17, 2024, 03:17:11 PM »
I have never used it but quite a few reputable  companies such as STP, Wynnes, Liqui Moly, Molyslip make a  gearbox oil additive. This suggests it can help  in  some cases.    I think its worth a try in a manual gearbox in an older car.    Especially if you are able to do the work yourself.
