Title: Clueless about wheels but may need a couple of new ones.....
Post by: guest5341 on February 09, 2016, 08:38:38 PM
Hi there.
So the potholes on Edinburgh's roads have really done my front wheels in over the last several months and in the last few months, I'm constantly having to inflate my front tyres every few weeks. The back ones are usually fine, but one of my front tyres this morning was at 10 PSI!. Visibly the tyre treads look fine. I don't have time myself to do the whole 'water and bubbles' test on the rims (which also look fine) so I'm guessing they've been knocked/cracked in the past over potholes.
Should I get my garage to check them out or should I go and buy new wheels? If that's the case, where do I start with types? I just want to replace the ones I have. I don't want too cheap and too expensive or fancy ones. Just standard I guess? Curent size: 185/55R15

Advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Get the tyres checked at a local independent tyre centre, it could be a number of things, for example, maybe a faulty valve, the tyre seal may have been broken or a slow puncture. All of these are fairly easy to solve and won't mean you need new tyres.

Probably tyres are no longer seated correctly on the rims, get the tyres removed and refitted.

Had the original 6 spoke alloys, and their condition deteriorated with paint flaking from them,  but no lead weights so they are still round. Two were very bad at maintaining pressure, so much so I swapped my foot pump for a compressor as 20 minutes a week pumping them up was irritating. Even after refitting and new valves the problem remained, I put up with it until new tyres were needed, but the problem was still there.

I recently gave up and got a set of 9 spoke alloys from a facelift model.

It seems that an alloy can become 'porous' especially if it has signs of corrosion, I believe the early wheels were not up to expected Honda standard, as the dealer said they would have changed them if I had asked in warranty, and had swapped many (also with the S2000).

Had a similar problem on previous car >16 years old, not Honda. Tyre kept loosing air, so I took it to a tyre specialist and he said that that the alloy wheel was rusting on the inside where the tyre bead met the wheel leading to air leaking. He sanded rust off and put some anti  corrosion jelly on it. It held pressure after that.
