Title: DIY gearbox overhaul
Post by: guest4426 on December 15, 2013, 08:00:18 PM
hi guys as the title says my recently purchased gd1 jazz has the cursed gearbox input shaft bearing fault, now by no means am i an expert but i am very confident when it comes to vehicle repairs, the only time anyone has touched my cars in the last 10 years is for the MOT, my question is has anyone had a go at repairing the gearbox themselves, getting it out shouldnt be that difficult, no more than taking one out of an ep3 type r civic .
i like to have a go at things and following this guide i am psyching myself up to just crack on with it....
http://www.hondafitjazz.com/manual/A00/HTML/01/SAA2E01E34150100000LCAT00.HTML

and using this kit....

does anyone have any pointers?

Unless specialist pullers or tools are required then it is only basic mechanical work. So I would say it should be no problem....

My gbox needed doing but Honda did the labour FOC, however I have rebuilt other boxes and it is nuts and bolts except for awkward circlips.

cheers John, the bearings just need pullers as far as i am aware, honda wont grant me that liberty you jammy sod so its either i buy the bearing kit and fit it my self or pay out what i gave for the car to put the box right  :(

So i bit the bullet and purchased replacement bearing pack available from honda, rrp is £186 for 7 bearings, i got mine for £70, gotta love the 'make an offer' button on ebay. :)

£186 is what I paid for my bearings, so I gain in Honda doing the work but paid top price on the bits.

if any one requires the said bearings (x7) the honda part number is 91002-PMW-305

that's a real rip-off, and it's only one bearing that fails,  I had my wifes Jazz done by a gearbox specialist and they only had to replace one bearing on the intermediate shaft for gears 1, 2 and 3  - you may notice that when you change into 4th and 5th the noise disappears.  After the bearing had been replaced the box was as quiet as a mouse again.

getting the gearbox out of the car and back in is probably going to take a while as the nearside front hub / drive shaft and lower suspension arms have to be taken off and that is probably why garage labour costs can be high, as the bearings shouldn't cost them much at wholesale prices.

My last honda was a night mare as the subframe had to come out but hondas are usually compliant when theres a 4lb smash hammer in my hand :)

Most awkward part of getting the gearbox out was getting the drive shaft out of the hub.

why would the bottom arms need to be removed? Surely just the bottom ball joints just need cracking off and the GTA swung away

According to the Honda manual the subframe should come out to what the lower arms are connected to... step22, link (http://www.hondafitjazz.com/manual/A00/HTML/01/SAA2E01E34150100000KAAT00.HTML).

I would imagine the Honda manual is just another way of getting an extra hours labour out of people.

No way, when I took the gearbox out I was wondering if I could take it out without getting the sub-frame off but there was not enough room so I had to take it off...
Probably some people could get the gearbox out without taking the sub-frame off but they`d damage, scratch or force something to get it done.

right so it was a long time coming but i have finally had a go at my gearbox, chuffed to bits as the sub frame didn't need removing, unfortunately the drive shafts were reluctant to separate from the hubs, got the n/s shaft out but the o/s wouldn't budge.
sorry i didn't take any more pictures i was just on a mad mission to get it done. My mate is a honda breaker so very kindly let me use his 2 poster lift as my workshop doesn't have one yet.
any way here are a few pictures i took, i bought the full 7 bearing rebuild kit a few months ago but i only ended up using 1 bearing.

all finished and put back together this morning, land rover mtf gearbox oil and a fresh clutch, smooth as butter and as quiet as a mouse pissing on cotton :)
