I treated myself to a new Stainless Steel Longlife axle back exhaust today, told the fitter i didnt want anything loud. We started off by taking off the original one to hear what it sounded like. It wasnt loud by any means, i couldve got away with putting a straight pipe on with a tailpipe only! Decided against it and fitted a small back box, increasing the bore from 38 mm to 50mm (this is the max recommended for a 1.4 engine). I chose a 75mm slash cut tail pipe, which is quite subtle, rolled out one nearly looked too big. In reflection, i couldve gotten away with a 100mm one. So how does it sound? A nice quiet but deep purr/burble at idle and a nice deep but not too loud note under acceleration. Am very pleased with the result

Heres the You Tube video.
The sound is quite subtle, Ive done a drive by, by my 15yr old and he says it sounds pretty good and not even slightly Chavvy! I am 44 after all! lol When driving with the windows down it is definitely audible but not intrusive

I thought stainless steel exhausts lasted the life of the car? At the shop we have a 1997 Nissan LDV and this still has the original system. Not as shiny as the OPs, it is true.

The OEM one i took off is in brilliant condition at 4 years old, i'll hold on to it and refit it when i come to sell

Hi
Dont forget to inform your insurance company of your "modification".

Of course

do they really need to be informed?
I'm about to replace mine(rusted mid-section) not for sake of sound but peace of mind

Yes- no matter what you change on the car, its best to inform your insurance company.

ugh, that's bad, thanks, will get a quote first then, with my insurance premiums, might end up selling it and going kwikfit route instead :)
and congrats to OP :)
-
Where did you get the SS exhaust from and what did it cost please?

If you ask OP, Longlife is UK based network.

hope it will fit, will report back if I ever manage to saw off old rusted one.. insurers gave green light 8)
