Title: 2012 CVT transmission problem ???
Post by: guest3875 on February 22, 2013, 12:47:18 PM
Hi.
Since 2012, I am almost happy owner of 1.4 CVT Jazz. I say almost, because I have an issue with my transmission and I don't know if is a defective or not, so I ask the other Jazz CVT owners if they has a similar symptom: when I push the brake pedal, just before the full stop, I feel a shock in the pedal, like the break don't hold for a split of second and then hold again. In other words, is like the engine break ends in some point and the car remains on the mechanical brake only (to say so). Sometime, this shock is pronounced, sometime is not so, depends of how hard I push the brake pedal.
If you know anything about this, if is a problem or is normal functionability of CVT transmission, please let me know.
Thanks a lot.

Sounds like the abs pump pulsing on and off, perfectly normal

Were you on a wet road when this occurred?  The ABS usually only kicks in under severe braking, or if one wheel slipped on a greasy patch.

If there were an intermittent contact from the ABS sensor, this might account for it.

I have a similar symptom although I feel no shock through the brake pedal. When I am braking and the car is slowing, at about 5 mph I notice a change in the rate of retardation. I assume this is the CVT internal clutch beginning to operate, if the clutch did not work the engine would stall. I have the older CVT with a starter clutch, CVTs from early 2011 have a torque converter.

Hi guys.
Is not an ABS problem, the symptom is present only when I slowly push the brake pedal on the last few meters and the car is about to full stop. If I push the pedal harder, the symptom is reduced almost to zero, but this is not a solution because my wife and my youngest sun has the car sickness.
Thanks.

A 2012 Jazz is still under warranty, so if you in any way feel insecure regarding safety related items such
as brakes, take the car to the Honda dealership and have them look at what you feel / think is a problem.

How you feel & how the car brake or don't brake is hard to long distance diagnose at a forum.

Good luck.

Perhaps I have not expressed properly, my english is not so acurate and I apologize for this: is not a safety issue, is more a personal confort issue. The brake works just fine, but in my opinion, decoupling of engine brake it's kinda hard (in fact, the shock feels in all engine block to say so). I just thought that the CVT transmission will be a smooth one all the way.
Regarding warranty, I was at the dealer with this issue, but I think that they have sold so few cars like mine, because they had no idea that is something wrong or not. They checked for computer errors (and have not found anything), version of gear computer update, and have concluded that PERHAPS there's nothing wrong with the car. But this perhaps is not enough for me, so here I am  ;D, waiting for other opinions.
Thanks.

I would drive another car with the same spec.  If it does not behave like yours, then there is something wrong.

Hi, I know what you mean my 2012 is the same, if I break hard it does not happen but I don't want to break hard. When I break gently or let the car cruse to a stop with my foot off the accelorator at approx. 5mph the car slows down as though it has dropped from 3rd to 1st gear and I lurch forward in my seat. I can get round it by flicking the gear paddle up a gear just before the car stops and it seems to help but it seems to defeat having an automatic. It does not do it as much or as strongly when I am in "S" mode, when I am on a stretch of road with stop start traffic I put the car into "S" and then into "D" when I am out of town.
You are not alone.

Hi guys.
John, if this car behavior is normal (like Pine and Brakeman says), so I'm glad that I'm not alone  :D.
And to drive an identical car for confirmation, is the next step that I've settled with the dealer, Chris.
Thanks you all.

Hi madasafish.
At all? Not a little bit? Can you please pay more attention at new trip? My wife never noticed until I told her the problem, so I think that is possible to not notice if you're paying attention to other driving elements.
Thanks.

Checked again this morning. No noticeable effect at 5mph.. car slows smoothly.

Recently I have found that this retardation effect seems to have become more noticeable when coming to a halt. The effect is always present but its severity varies from nearly nothing to almost head jerking which spoils the driving experience. It never happens when the engine/gearbox is cold which makes me wonder if the increased tickover speed when the engine is cold somehow negates the problem. As the CVT gearbox is controlled by the ECU I wonder if there is a software update available, I will ask at the dealership next time I go there.

I too have noticed this but only sporadically - it is within the last metre or so of halting and does seem to be more noticeable when trying to come to a smooth stop. I just thought it was a characteristic of the CVT system but that would seem more likely if it used a clutch - ours is the torque converter model - perhaps the control system is not quite sure which 'gear' it should be in - at least that's what it feels like - a bit  :-\

I have 12000 on the speedo now and I till have the feeling that when coming to a gentle stop the change down is not smooth, almost as if it is stuck in gear, but there is no kick or pulsing in the brake pedal. I don't see this as a problem.so for now I will put up with it.
