Hello,
I am a happy owner of a Jazz 1.2 with 90 HP. The car was bought brand new in 2010.
The issue is the white paint, very delicate and fragile especially on the hood. Small bits of paint and splinters come off very easily. This is rather dissapointing. Even my previous Fiat was better... :o
All the rest is just great, but how will the car be after 10 years? :'(
I have just wrote an email to Honda Italy, lets see.
-
Is it the clear top coat that is flaking, or some of the pigmented paint? Has there been any chemical fallout over the car (although I would assume if so, it would have affected the whole car, not just the bonnet)
Sounds like this section needs a respray
-
Hello,
just the thin top coat. The paint looks like a singlelayer. :o
No chemical fallout.
-
Japanese cars normally have softer paint than European cars.
By the way, we never had white until the Hybrid came about last year.
-
Hello and welcome 8)
As Richard pointed out, the paint on Honda are notorious for being thin
-
@Charly
I'm also disappointed with the paint. Although I've already replaced the hood once (hit a deer), it's in a bad condition again.
-
Well thank you for your replies.
I am looking forward receiving Honda's point of view. I will keep you updated.
The great issue about the web is that we can quickly share bad and good news.
I frankly believe that a thicker layer of paint would be of no harm to Honda's expenses.
-
The bonnet on my storm silver GE isn't doing too well after 25K miles with bits of paint flaking off due to stone chips. These chips are much worse than what I ever experienced with my two previous silver GDs.
Fortunately the car being silver they are not as noticeable as they would have been if it were in red (unless milano red is a tougher paint).
-
I'm also running a white one and was disturbed to see a couple of chips after only a month of ownership. Seems it's common to lots of cars these days thanks to modern paint formulations and the drive to minimise costs by skimping on the paint. As you say, a thicker coat wouldn't go amiss.
Meanwhile I'll use a lot of wax and try to avoid the flying stones. Not so easy in a country where 30% of the road system is made of gravel :)
-
In North of Italy lot of salt is spread on streets during winter.
This will be a great catalist for rust.

For US market Fit you can get this

Not for me ???
-
not for me either to much black plastic.
-
Looks offle... :P
The issue is that the paint should be thicker; it is so simple.
Silence from Honda Italy >:(
-
Never liked bonnet bra ???
-
If it was a transparent one maybe.
-
I think that the wedge-shaped nose of the Jazz means that there's more chance of flying stones being high enough to hit the bonnet than on other vehicles where stones at the same height would hit the front grill. That, not inherently weaker paint, might be the reason for more paint damage.

Does not solve the problem, the fragile paint is also on the sides of the car just next to the tyre. >:(

If it was a transparent one maybe.
For AU market

Do you know if this problem is also in common with cars of other brands?
-
:o I have check out this issue on the web. :o
It is full of similar cases with German, French, Italian and Japanese cars.
It is due to the new paints being used - green paints that are so green that tend to disappear by themselves >:( >:(
Still no reply from Honda Italy.

How thin is "thin paint". Afaik there is an anti-corrosion coat, a base coat, 2 colour coats and a clear coat. At least that is what my neighbour tells me and he has had his own panel shop for 30 odd years. He reckons that Honda are no better or worse than any other car. He drives a Range Rover V8i (big gas guzzler) since he tows a large boat sometimes.
Also, the wheel arches and metal surfaces above the wheels have a coat of what looks like bitumen, it is quite thick and not hard.
There are many gravel roads in South Africa and when you are diving behind a big lorry or trailer, stones get chucked up.
-
i got lots of tiny white chips on my blue bonnet :(
-
Those of you that have chipped paint, have you had Sureguard or Paintguard protection applied?? Maybe there would be a valid claim??
I have had it put on my last 3 cars and the red Astra still took a few nasty stone chips but no micro chips, as far as I know my Jazz is relatively chip free, but I suppose as its a tuition car theres never anyone in front of us ;D
I have just been to the local Hand Car Wash and inspected the front of the car post-wash, and theres possibly 3-4 very small chips after 21,000 miles.

I have sent another mail to Honda.
Their silence is vexing.
-
Still silence from Honda Italy. >:(
I have sent a mail to Honda Japan. ;)
I have lived in the States for years and travel to Tokyo 2 times a year and know how efficient Honda is in these two countries.
But here is Italy things are different; we are on the same level of Greece, Portugal, Spain and other countries that you all know how are behaving in these weeks...
best regards.
-
Actually, here in Portugal, Honda is one of the best in terms of client support.
Don't know a case of a complain.
My father has had honda for past 10 years, says he will never leave it... lol
-
Not fragile only paint but also windshield or perhaps just my bad luck >:(
Two windshields broken in a month. Cost? 900€ per windshield (local Honda service).

Collecting our brand new Jazz a couple of winters ago, I was following my wife in another car and no more than 50 yards up the road having turned out of the dealership, in the dark I could see a gritter approaching down the other side of the road. Full spread across the front of our sparkling new Jazz, just turned its wheels a few times. Aagh! My wife felt awful about it but there was nowhere to 'hide' the car.
I forgot about it till some months later when I noticed an undue number of chips on the bonnet. I thought 'that b gritter' and wondered if it was much worse than expected due to relatively new, yet to fully harden (Milano red) paint. So it was a touch up job for me and we have kept a layer of polish on the car ever since. 20,000 miles later and hardly any chips.
Cost-saving issues aside, I believe car paints are 'softer' these days due to 'green' formulations being used. I think the angle of Jazz's bonnet does make it more prone to chips. It's one reason why I increase my following distance on surfaces where there's a chance of stones being flung up. Oncoming vehicles (as with the gritter) can't do much about. I'd certainly fit a 'bra' if it was a real problem.

Honda Italy replied saying that they need more time and will soon get back to me.
Lets see.

Hi there,
Honda has officially invited me to take the car to the dealer for official photos of the paint.
These photos will be necessary to ask for a repair paied by warranty.
I will do this by the end of this month due to several business trips in the way.
This is an unlucky month: my BMW has an electrical failure - something has a negative feedback on the starter motor. I have something to do for the weekend ;D
-
Dear All
I have been on several business trips and haven't been able to add that Honda has accepted to fix the paint issues. Great Honda.
Some pics FYI
The car is full of these:

It should not cost much to respray the bonnet, which is easy to take off and replace. Then you can have 5 or 6 coats applied with a rub-down each time, before the clear coat. I had my wife's Jetta done, which also has a sloping bonnet like the Jazz and the difference was marked, a much deeper gloss. Now, after 2 years there are a few marks from stones, but no chip marks.
