Title: Sliding flap in plastic cover beneath windscreen

If you lift the bonnet and look at front of the black plastic shelf that is located below the windscreen there is a sliding flap 30mm high and 130mm long.  This has a handle that allows it to be moved to the right, thereby revealing a rectangular hole.

Anyone know the purpose of this?

it has the vin number underneath stamped on the shell
