Title: Jazz in the snow
Post by: guest2913 on November 22, 2011, 03:31:38 PM
For many of us who owned a Jazz or Jazzs over the years, am just interested how it handles in the snow? This be the first time I've drove a car in the snow and just been dreading the thought of snow, especail i work nights and traveling home at 4am on ungritted roads / uncleared roads and was wondering would they be any point adding snow tyres?

Well james, as long as you are light on the throttle and gentle on the brakes. you should do fine! my wifes jazz (02 1.4 DSI-SE Manual) handled brilliantly on very bad roads on her commute from preston to southport, she passed car after car that were stuck and being pushed, with normal tyres fitted, i had my civic last year, and that handled it well too. The roads were much worse in southport than here in preston, and i was pleased that her jazz got her back safely every day with no trouble, even over black ice. Just take it slow and you will beat all the rev happy idiots out there!!  ;D Some lads on here use winter tyres, so no doubt that will increase the jazz's already great stability even further.... ;)

thats good to know that! I drove my motorbike the last 2 years in the snow and only got stuck the once where the snow melted on a manhole and couldn't get back out! haha
i wonder if the manual mode make a difference over CVT but am surpised how well the CVT works even when you try and beat it with 7 speed mode!

Light, low-powered, front-drive cars on relatively narrow tyres - particularly if less than half-worn - driven appropriately have quite an advantage in snow compared to other 2wd. The trick for any vehicle in snow is to keep the revs down as far as possible and drive ultra-smoothly.  My GE Jazz is great on snow. Winter tyres - though I don't have those - probably help lots too... as well as improve stopping distances below 7degreesC.

never knew that i thought the wider the tyre the better, hence why 4x4 got on better on the snow due to 4x4 wheel drive and wide tyres!

The wider tyre has more road contact area and for a given down force will therefore have less loading per unit area - this non intuitive fact works against the notion that the wider the tyre the better the grip.

If you can cope with riding a motorcycle in snow by comparison driving a car is a doddle!

You also have the advantage of travelling at 4am when traffic is light or non-existent, as other people have already said light on the throttle, minimal braking if possible and stay relaxed.

In the last lot of snow we did not see many gritters in my area and lots of roads went untreated, no doubt with the present financial cut-backs many councils might be tempted to leave even more roads untreated.

Last winter my £33000 BMW was like Bambi on ice  ::) whilst my wife's Jazz was like a little tractor about the place!!

Snow, what snow?? ;D

The Jazz is very good in the snow up to about 6" as long as you have proper tyres and drive to keep momentum up but very smoothly, anticipating what's ahead in loads of time. I've ditched the OEM Bridgestones for proper snowflaked winters (Vredstein Quadtrac 3s) and that makes a world of difference.  The car was dire on Bridgestones.  I also carry a shovel & decent tow rope so I can dig myself out, often it's just a snow wedge in front of a wheel that stops you.

I don't know what the Jazz is like in really deep snow as I have more suitable wheels for that. :)

As jirams says above, winter/snow tyres are narrower to put more pressure down & get grip.  Super wide tyres on 4x4s are more of a fashion item than any use offroad or in snow.  Not all 4x4s are good in snow, my brother's X6 (and the X5 before it) can't get out of their drive and they use my parent's Disco4.

The Jazz has good forward grip in the snow due to a very forward weight bias (front engine and fuel tank under the front seats).

However this does make the rear end lively (oversteer), so just be careful around the bends.

The wider tyre has more road contact area and for a given down force will therefore have less loading per unit area - this non intuitive fact works against the notion that the wider the tyre the better the grip.

This is NOT the case on dry tarmac though.

Some call it a wheelie bin, in the winter it's a LGISDGP (Local Government issued Snow Depth Gauge Platform)!! ;D Daft thing is they even send the truck round to pick up the brown (garden waste) bin every 2 weeks even if there is a foot of snow on the ground but te roads are ploughed. :'(

One of my fave pics entitled "Has anyone seen my legs?"   :D :D

This is NOT the case on dry tarmac though.

As evident on F1 racing cars for example.

Wide for large footprint and lots of friction/grip.

Narrow to have down-force to break through snow/ice.

My OH drives a Nissan Pick Up not a Nevara. He kept going all through the snow in it. It's an outstanding and underage 4x4.I drove a Renault  Extra Van in the snow which was interesting but the best fun was my Mini Cooper  ;D

Lol. Typical council. wasting money on resources thst are not needed, instead of using the man power/cash on clearing and gritting the roads.... numpties!!.. loving the pic! one immobilised dog!! :))

I did phone Highland Council up to complain that they hadn't collected the weekly (then :-[ ) main bin collection for a few weeks only to receive the standard "it depends on road conditions yada, yada, yada".  They then couldn't explain why the same operators in same conditions in near identical wagons could of picked up the garden waste, had there been any.  Councils, U gotta love em.  :P

;D unbelievable! so they collect non existant garden waste, but leave all the general waste bins full to brimming!! glad you had them stumped when you shot that question at them.... good on you i say!!  ;)

Pics taken with a bog standard iPhone 3G.

Re council & rubbish it's just part of life up there in the winter and bin men don't go all rule book and reject anything with bins open or bags beside them.  At least up there they know how to keep the roads clear or clear significant snow fall reasonably quickly, the road to the north of my town can have 4' to 6' of the white stuff and they use snow-blowers.  Note the Z bend sign below for scale.

Well, if they keep the roads that clear and take bags and empty overflowing bins, they can certainly be forgiven for the odd discrepency eh?  ;) great pics, i have just got a apple 3G i phone, not really took many pics yet, but looking at these pics, the quality looks great!  ;D

It's certainly handy as don't carry a camera normally.  Useful for dash shots when it gets mildly chilly! ;)

It got down to -20c at one stage, winter 09/10.  Last winter was a pussy cat compared with that, it just went a little further south.  It's a different (but beautiful) world with those temps day after day, week after week.

You certainly keep fit shovelling the drive.

D3DSL - I was asking about your camera because the pinkish colour cast in the centre of many of you images images is a well known 'defect' with Samsung and allegedly also on iPhone.

I have just got a Samsung Galaxy S II and noticed the effect first time I used the camera in such light conditions - thus I immediately wondered when I saw your images.

No worries. ;D I'm never going to win a photography award but it's handy to have for quick snaps.  Especially for the insurance company when some dozy oick (for want of a better word) drove into the side of my Jazz in Yeovil last Feb.  :(

Great pics.. keep em coming!  :D thats proper deep snow! where is the jazz this time? completely buried?? lol. yeovil? nice part of the country, i love somerset. Is this the area in the pics? it was bad down south.... as bad, if not worse than the north for a change! i have stayed at watchet a few times at a haven site called doniford bay. And when i was a kid... pontins brean sands....  ;D

No, not yeovil in the pics.  Snow scenes from Strathspey area where we regularly got hammered with snow 09/10, even got 8" of snow on Chrismas day.  Was great heading out to play in the snow on te back lanes, as long as I got ahead of the ploughs like 3rd pic. :) Now live in Sunny Surrey but still have Highland house as it's mid renovation.  Yeovil was where I sold my wife's Diso 3, had 2 when lived in Highlands but sold one last feb.  In the wrong place at the wrong time when someone decided to drive into the side of me having looked but not seen.  Insurance sorted it out, eventually.

Might have some more time in the snow this weekend.  This was a bit south of Inverness this afternoon.  Will be interesting as heading up in a RWD BMW 520d, not renowned for it's capabilities in the snow. :(

My BMW 318i was positively dangerous in snow conditions - had it for 8 years from new ('till 2001)and would never have an other RWD car.

Followed it with VW Golf, Honda Civic and now Honda Jazz - waytogo!

What are Jazz's like in the snow?

As mentioned earlier in the thread, my wifes jazz handled the 21 mile journey to her work place very well in the awful conditions of last years winter.... the roads were much worse in southport than here in preston. With black ice present on many roads, she passed car after car being pushed and struggling to get traction, she uses the same method as i do.... keep the revs down to a minimum, very slow set off, using gears to slow down rather than the brakes until the very last moment and even then, using the very least of braking pressure... speed down to suit conditions and most of all, a massive distance from the car in front of you... i have not had my jazz out in any bad conditions as i bought it in early april, i had the civic then, which too, did quite well in the circumstances....  :D
