Title: 1.3 engine query
Post by: Sharon on July 30, 2026, 10:28:00 PM
oh I know I'm sad but I note that the engine in my MK1 2004 jazz has a 1339 cc rating. I'm thinking of getting a new (used) mark 3, 1.3 but note that the actual cc of those is 1318. So I assume it's a less powerful engine than my current old banger,  but by how much? The engine in mine now is just right for my needs and I dont want to get an auto, but I'm just concerned a little about the power?

the mk3 has 102hp with twin cam 16v and ivtec compared to your mk1 with 83hp and no ivtec or twin cam with 8v

The old days of judging car performance by cc are long gone. Even F1 cars are “only” 1600cc!

Another part of the performance equation is the vehicle weight, and the Mk3 is slightly heavier than your Mk1. Data from here: https://www.auto-data.net/en/ suggests that the power/weight ratio for your Mk1 is about 84.7 Hp/tonne, and for the Mk3 it’s about 89.6. So the Mk3 should feel slightly better even though the engine is smaller (there are lots of other factors here though, such as tuning and gear ratios) and it will have significantly better fuel consumption. Test drive one and see how it feels to you.
