Title: TA

Does Traffic Announcement still work?

I was stuck in traffic yesterday and I thought I would have heard a TA

I only found out that the M25 was closed when I got home

Hi - I think I can recollect mine working a couple of months ago, but I usually have it turned off so couldn't tell you if it is still working today.

I gave up on it a few years ago when it seemed to me that commercial stations were using it to broadcast adverts. And many of the transmissions were less than helpful … “Heavy traffic on Bloggs Road” without telling you where Bloggs Road was. Nowadays I use the traffic overlay on Google Maps.

However, if you do want it, IIRC it’s a FM service not DAB. Can’t remember now if that means you have to listen to FM radio or if it’ll interrupt a DAB station. Nor can I remember the difference between TA and TP … do you need both turned on?

TA stands for Traffic Announcement (switches it on and off) and TP for Traffic Program (displays when the station supports it).  I stopped using it years ago as I found that it was too out of date to be useful.  I did work on FM and on a few DAB channels but not all.

There is something in the back of my mind about the BBC ceasing to pay for the service, but I could be totally wrong.

I found that when TA was auto switched on by stations and your radio automatically, temporarily, switched to that station for the announcements, the station took ages to cancel it so your radio went back to your selected station

As above, Google Maps traffic is the way to go if you can

Just get rid of the useless head unit.
Honestly it's the best upgrade you can do and not a hard job either.
