Title: Using the built in but hidden wireless capability for Android Auto
Post by: Paul SW11 on February 28, 2025, 01:39:41 PM
I have a 2022 MK4 Jazz and I’m using my android phone wired in to the USB data port to fire up android auto on the car’s central display unit.

I understand that it is possible to configure the display unit so that it works WIRELESSLY with the phone.

Has anybody tried it? Does it work? If so, does it create any adverse issues? And how do I do it if it does work without issues?

Thanks

PB

I did it. Works perfectly. But it's an undocumented feature and service people may not like it if noticed.  Though it can be changed back to WIRED mode in 20 seconds..

Initially I switched to AA wireless for about a year and I found it terrible. Once connected though it stayed connected

It would take anywhere from 10 secs to 2 minutes to connect ....  or fail which is not ideal when you just want to drive, not wait for Google Maps to load for traffic

It failed about 30% of the time which involved having to reboot the car, headunit, or both and took ages to load another 30%

The only reason I used wireless was so I could play my music from a USB stick but, after investigation, I now have my music on my phone and use AIMP which mimics the USB

The bonus is that my phone now connects to the headunit every time and very rapidly

Have been using wireless Android Auto for the last two years, connects within 10 seconds and works seamlessly with our two Samsung phones, A14 & A24.
Car year is Nov 2022.

MY22 and Samsung S10 at the time

Not bothered with my S23+ as wired gives me an instant connection

As usual though, if it works for you  :)

Worked with Samsung A41 and A14, just took longer to come up and sometimes not, so stayed with wired. The only charging my phone ever needs is from the car so another bonus with wired. As said, whatever works for you, easy enough to try.

I've hidden the wire

From the mount it goes under the centre console and comes out in the gap just above the USB port so all I can see is about 2" of cable from the USB port

I always thought AA was wired and Apple CarPlay was wireless in the Jazz so it’s great if people have found a way to use wireless AA

I’m using Apple CarPlay wirelessly and it’s never failed and connects within seconds to the infotainment system in the Jazz

I’ve been using Spotify for my music since I purchased my Jazz in November/December 24 and it works perfectly

I can also use Apple Maps or any other map apps on my iPhone via CarPlay but I’ve used the built in sat nav instead and it’s been working great

I've never used the built in SatNav because it has no traffic in the UK

Whether it works without issues seems to be hit and miss

Some have had no connection issues, but some, like me, found it very frustrating most of the time with long or failed connections

It didn't like my Samsung S10 most of the time but if it did connect it never dropped out

That’s very true Kremmen but I still find the in built sat nav to work flawlessly

My partner normally tracks the route in Google Maps to see if there’s any traffic on the journey

Luckily I don’t do many long journeys to worry about traffic; my last long journey to Suffolk and back did show some traffic on Google Maps that wasn’t shown on the Jazz sat nav but as it was on the M25 there wasn’t any suitable detour anyway

I love the in-built directions that appear on the drivers display too which is a great help…. Not sure about them appearing in pink though!

I use Google Maps in satellite view which is transmitted to the Jazz headunit from the phone

Satellite view is very useful to me as I can relate to what I can see out of the windscreen

Plus, Google Maps also produces turn info on the driver display as you say

I've tried both as my 2013 9G Civic only had the Garmin mapping and I found it often lacking in destination searches but Google seem to have every place I've searched for

We all have different requirements though

I think I’ll try Google Maps next time I have a journey

Just to add a bit of info this is my wired solution :

From phone just a small bit visible :

Google Maps in satellite view looks great

So far I’ve only used the in-built sat nav and found it to work extremely well

I have a reliable wireless Apple CarPlay connection so I might try Google Maps next time

True.  The voice activated control systems are constantly listening and could know someone is a bit of a gasbag.  But how does it know its the passenger ?   ;D

Today the car decided it's not starting Android Auto even though it recognises the phone and when using the wired connection, it's done this before and repairs itself a few days later, weird!!. Does a new Jazz have any problems with Android Auto?

Difficult to know whether it's the car or phone not playing ball

How much data does satellite view use and doesn’t the data transfer rate hinder the gps real time location ie: time lag between actual position and indicated position on display?

I find already that there is a time lag just using Waze or Google maps in basic display modes anyway!

TIA

Having used Google Maps navigation in satellite view many times whilst exploring Reading I can say the GPS location is spot on, no lag

As for data, it uses very little as my monthly usage is tiny, even adding the time I spend out playing with the phone on bus journeys

For those who've had trouble with Android auto occasionally not starting, its helpful to check that the inbuilt Garmin GPS is up and running, as Android / Google could be configured to use the car GPS not phone GPS.  This is what ive found once or twice.  Once inbuilt sat nav is up and running , Google Maps or Waze will connect utilising the car GPS
