Title: Service Reminder System
Post by: guest1329 on January 31, 2011, 07:10:55 PM
I have a question regarding the service reminder system. I get the ‘service due soon’ symbol in amber which interrupts the current display of the multi information display after starting the car and driving for about ten yards, not a problem, I can cancel it by pressing the select/reset button. But the handbook states that the system message indicator (i) should also come on. This does not show only the symbol.

Can anyone clarify whether this should come on with the service reminder or is it a misprint in the handbook ?

Same happens to me, amber spanner symbol but no 'i' symbol.
Also, I bought my car brand new last March - I have a month to go before it needs servicing so I'm ignoring it for now  :).

When it goes "Service due now" you'll probably get the i symbol lighting. It then gets annoying, as the spanner comes up every time you cycle through the info screens.

You are being told by the system that your car needs a service now hence the symbol coming on. If you only want to service your car every 12500 miles or 12 month then I would recomend you get them to turn the system off so there is then no problems if you need anything under warrenty.
If you just leave it and not get it serviced when stated then you could run in to problems with any warrenty.

^^^^ Yep, did exactly that and got it serviced this week. They've now disabled the variable frequency service schedule and it's reverted to the yearly one so I should get this symbol at the end of every February from now on  ;).

The thing that has slightly annoyed me is that at no point in my car buying process, nor in the brochures, nor via the sales staff did anyone ever mention "variable servicing" to me.
I think it's fine to have the option, but Honda should really make it plain from the outset that they have this and ALSO that it can be easily 'rectified' should you request it at service time.

The only way I knew about it is from reading forums like these - not ideal imo, Honda should've "come clean" from the outset (I even bought Honda Happiness and they still didn't mention "random servicing light" at ANY point).

Still, it's been "fixed" now and the cynical part of me (which believes that NO car needs more than yearly servicing otherwise it isn't roadworthy imo) has been tied up and gagged again  :D

Some authorities would say that changing oil more frequently than every 12 months is a good thing.

(Computer says 1350 miles to next service.)

You wont get the symbol coming on anymore if it has been disabled. It basicly gets turned off and can never be turned back on, this is why you should have signed some paperwork and a sticker put in your service book.
All this should have been explained to you when you asked them to turn it off.

I don’t think my variable servicing indicator has ever been turned on. I have nothing showing in the multifunction display that indicates it’s active. Is turning on variable servicing part of the PDI or is it on when it leaves the factory?

Aaah, well, there you go then - yet again Honda failing to mention something  ???  :D.

All the service chap said to me was that variable servicing couldn't be turned back on (didn't say anything about the light itself never reappearing - I assumed it would simply appear yearly rather than randomly once the the variable servicing had been turned off).
Having said that, it doesn't really matter - it's easy to remember the service time as it's also Tax time (and in a couple of years also MOT time) so once the DVLA send me a reminder for the road tax, I'll do everything in one go.

I'm just glad I can now do the "normal" yearly service that cars should have without the dash annoying me at any other time of the year :) (as mentioned, this is a standard family car and as such shouldn't need any more than that).

It should have been turned on as part of the PDI.
If you press the sel button on the steering wheel so it goes through trip a and b, on the third press it should tell you when the next service is due and what one i.e. A or B etc.

It looks like it wasn't turned on as part of the PDI. To be honest I'm not that bothered as I would rather have an annual / 12.5K service interval like my old Jazz. Reading some of the posts on variable servicing where a Jazz has just had a B service and then several weeks later it's wanting an A service makes me laugh. Who wants to keep taking their car back to the garage unless you are retired and have nothing better else to do.

A "B" service includes all of the "A" service tasks, so a word with your service centre might be useful.

The "A" service is diffrent to the "B" service and is only carried out together if needed.

I had mine turned off during the PDI, they tried to say it was 'naughty' but then admitted that it is my car after all.

Other than that, I think it's an ace motor and I am very impressed.
