Title: Washer Nozzle Jets Completely Blocked After 4 Years
Post by: Tox Laximus on October 05, 2024, 09:12:58 PM
Got the car in 2020 and over the last 6 months the spray has got gradually lower and lower.

Checked the pipes and they are ok. took off the plastic jets and blew into them with a bike pump, one was blocked and the other let some air though, dunked them in warm water did not work, tried descaler did not work, tried switch cleaner and managed to clear them quite well or so it seemed.

Put them back on the car and even worse.  :P

Ordered a new set from Cox Motor Parts, cost is just over 40 quid for both which is slightly cheaper than honda parts uk or ebay, they are not identical, one is drivers side and one is passengers side, they are colour coded, blue dot is for drivers side, they are horrendously over-designed and intricate inside, its no wonder they blocked.

They may also be a problem with the pump but it sounds fine and it runs freely when disconnected to the jets.

Drilled the end that connects to the hose with 2mm drill and 25-30mm deep, good as new.

Bits of plastic and rubber came out, I think these tiny bits and pieces are there to create smooth laminar flow but because they are so intricate they became blocked, you don't need laminar flow on window washers that's crackers.

Have you, perchance, been using washing up liquid in the washer bottle??
If so that is your problem! It contains salt and will completely block washer jets.
You need to flush the tank with hot water and keep doing so until the water shows absolutely no trace of 'gunge' .
If you can get the either end (preferably the tank end) of the pipe. disconnect and run hot water through it. Do it in short bursts, otherwise you run the risk of burning out the pump!

Always use same tesco washer fluid mixed to the correct ratio, there was no residue on the jets or in the pipes at all, they were very clean, when drilling them out a tiny rubber washer came out along with white plastic stuff, they were quite hard to drill so god knows whats inside them but it seems unnecessary and maybe the reason they clogged in the first place.

Yeah I used cheap fluid but everything is nice and clean and it was never a problem on my focus (2005), fiesta (2013) and jazz mk3 (2018).

Got the new nozzles yesterday, if you try blowing though them you can't and that is by design, they give a much better jet compared to my drilled ones, you can resurrect them with a 2mm drill or get some new ones for 40 quid.

Either way marshall honda will charge you £150 just to inspect your washers and at least another £80 to fit new nozzles.

The best way to take them off is to lift and prop up bonnet, then you can take them off by gently going left and right a few times while pulling downwards, once off gently remove from the hose, there is no need to remove the sound proofing/heat protection.

Also try to avoid using tapwater  to mix screenwash  especially if you live in a 'hard' water area such as Kent.  . We get heavy limescale buildup in kettles, showers ,etc that would shock folk from softer water areas. And we need to use far more soap and detergents to get decent suds

I use ready mixed minus 20C  screenwash in winter  .    I do use a 100:1 concentrate summer screenwash  with tap water in summer  but this is a specialist product that contains  a surfactant  to minimise limescale problems.

If it's any help I use a Russell Hobbs Brita filter kettle

I've been using it for over 5 years and unlike previous kettles it very rarely needs any descaling, maybe once a year

I used the filtered water for irons and anything that may suffer from scale

This is opposed to the dedicated Brita Filters, no point having 2 on the go

When I used to mix my own screen-wash I would save the water from my dehumidifier as it is pure unadulterated water.  But now I use Prestone all year round, usually buy it from Screwfix or Toolstation.
