Hi everyone. I bought quite well preserved, relatively low mileage at 59000, Honda Jazz mk1 2008 GE3 1.4i DSi CVT recently (reg: SM58 AFZ).
With original Honda CVT Fluid costing around £80 now I decided to try an aftermarket one I came across when searching for cvt fluid. It is basically half price of the original one, that is for 5 litres, and the business seems to be genuine. The fluid shipped really fast with DPD.
You can get it here - https://www.westwayoils.co.uk/products/cvt-f-fluid-suitable-for-honda-vehicles-honda-hmmf-fluid
Any thoughts before I drain the old one and pour this one in? Thanks everyone.

I hope it works out for you, but for the sake of £30-£35 extra every 2 years I personally wouldn't take the chance.

Castrol do one as well:
NOT for Mark 1 CVT

As do Mobil.
I”d be suspicious of the Westway fluid as it states that it is suitable for all Honda CVT’s which of course is unlikely to be correct as HCF-2 and CVT-F are both quite different so not sure how it replaces both?
BTW the OP has a MK1 but posted in MK2 section.
-
Castrol specifically state their synthetic oil is unsuitable for the Mark 1 CVT clutches.
-
I think I will call them to clarify etc.

So I called Westway Oils moment ago, they have checked against my reg. and said ot is definitely right fluid for my CVT, that mechanics buy this one in bulk for Hondas and I should not be worried. So I will go for it and see what happens. I just really have first proper drive in the car yesterday and noticed that there was only very slight judder upon acceleration from stand still, did not noticed that upon test drive. Normally that would not bother me at all and if I was not focusing on that particular thing I might not have noticed at all.
Will report back after I change it and drive it bit more. Might be quite substantial savings if you want to do the full flush.
-
Could get pretty expensive if it messes up your CVT... :(
-
If you have any sign of judder you should do 2 flushes and a final fill which is recommended by Honda.

That would imply that I perhaps try this fluid from westway and if the judder disappears or does not get worse, then I do second flush. And then the final one too if deemed necessary.
I somehow trust the guy on the phone. I asked him, so are you 100% sure that this is not going ruin my CVT, that it has the starter clutch and Honda uses two different fluids for the mk1 cvt vs mk2 cvt and that Honda has its own branded CVT fluid. His reply basically was that Honda has the fluid produced for them too and that he is 100 sure that the fluid is the right one for mk1 and safe.
I am going to risk it. If it is not all that great would I notice any symptoms before any serious damage occurs? I will take it easy.
After the first partial flush is it enough to cycle or engage the transmision while stationary sitting on all wheels with foot on the brake? Just cycle through to drive modes, leaving it in ech mode (i.e. D or S) for certain amount of time? If yes, how long in each gear? Thank you.

This is what Westway state:
Liability
It is the buyer's responsibility to ensure that the goods are the fit for application. We cannot accept responsibility for additional charges or consequential loss incurred if a product does not fit or does not give the desired results. Our liability is limited to the price paid for the goods only.

That is obviously general clause for many similar types of business endeavours. What if I find that it is really brilliant for Jazz mk1 CVTs and will do another 100k miles using this fluid.
I will be the trailblazer and save many folks lots of money. You cannot argue with £38 pounds for 5 litres if it is any good - given that by then not all mk1 cvts will be rusted to oblivion.
If it is going to be a massive disaster then I will be just another fool who wanted to save few quids. Will try to find the very actual oem number if there is any for CVT mk1 fluid. Because westway mentions few in their specs. They also use the term CVT-F which honda uses too.
-
Mobil also sell a CVT-F but it excludes Honda models with a starter clutch.

Why take the risk?
-
I don't perceive it as significant risk because I called them, gave them my REG and the guy sounded really knowledgeable. I suspect that a company who creates lubricants will have wast knowledge and expertise on what is wrong or right otherwise they would have be out of business already.
Honda does not make the fluid themselves, they have it made for them & just stick their logo on it. The listing list all the relevant specs. too & even claims that it surpasses the oem fluid in some respect.
-
Just though I will update everyone on this cheap aftermarket CVT-F fluid. They sold like 200+ 5 liter bottles on ebay too, apart from claiming that garages buy it in bulk from them. I have done approx. 500 miles after emptying out approx 3.5l of the old one and pouring in the Westway one in. So far so good I would say.
-
Any update on this CVT fluid replacement?
Honda CVT-F seems to become very rare and expensive. Although I bought a stock of 2x 4 liters, I would not mind to have a cheaper provider for flush purpose.
-
Yep, still great. Cannot see any issues. Will buy another 5 litre bottle soon and do another flush before MOT when changing oil and filter too. No judder, not there was any significant one before the change, perhaps slight.
-
Thanks for info mate!
I wonder if they deliver outside UK, as I'm from Romania.
Their Facebook account seems to be inactive since 4 years ago so I sent them a message in the contact form. Hopefully they will reply :)

Last month I purchased 5L CVT-F for my MK1 from westway and performed full flush. No issues so far
-
Yep, mine car still runs great too, apart from back box falling off few days ago, so working on that at the moment :-D
-
For what its worth, I used Westway to buy some compressor oil as the manufacturer wanted twice the price, whereas Westway was £10 shipped for 1 litre.
Anyway, back on topic.
I have a Jazz Hybrid CVT, 2011. I have seen that Honda Green Oil has jumped in price, so I switched to Motul 0w-20 Hybrid Oil at £35 for 4 litres. Car runs absolutely perfect. Motul also do a dedicated 0w-16 Hybrid Oil, but I think 16 weight doesn't offer enough protection on really hot summer days when it can quite easily be 30 degrees (as today was!)
In terms of CVT oil, the cheapest I can see is £70 for 4 litres, which is outrageous for a consumable.
So as a substitution, I am considering to use Motul Multi CVT-F transmission fluid.
Spec sheet: https://azupim01.motul.com/media/motulData/DO/base/MULTI_CVTF_en_FR_motul_45610_20220505.pdf
The Honda CVT fluid part number on the bottle is 0826099905HE. However, the bizzare bit is that the Motul spec sheet states, on the one hand "Attention, not recommended for CVT unit fitting hybrid vehicles" but on the hand, if you look at page 3, it shows that it is comparable to HCF-2 and CVT-F and can be used in CVT models without a wet starting clutch. But as we know, HCF-2 and CVT-F are two different types of fluid, so I don't quite get it.
Anyway, thought I would share. :o

Just noticed a judder when pulling away, ordered another 5l to do another flush. With the previous 5L leftover I might have enough to do two flushes this time. Will see and update here if the judder has gone after 2nd flush.
-
Done another 3.5l flush with westways. The judder mentioned above was possibly intermittent issue as seemed to have diminished to almost zero even before this flush. Went for a quick drive after the flush, feels good, perhaps slightly more responsive.
So this was second 3.5l flush with the westways since I got the car. There is about 700 miles between the flushes. The magnetic end of the drain plug had very minor layer of dust like metal mixed with oil - like a thin layer of charcoal paste. Much less so than upon the first flush. No big particles or shavings.
I will use Xado EX120 too when it arrives. And hopefully that should be maintenance free for couple of years until next flush or two.
-
Westway does not deliver outside UK.
-
Not even their ebay shop?
-
Hi mate,
How's the oil performance?
Interested in this as the Honda's so flipping expensive.
-
Hi, so far so good. No issues I can think of. Judder free and smooth. Used the Xado EX120 just in case when I got it as per my previous post. Will definitely keep using the WestWays one. Take care.
-
Excellent thanks for the update pal!
-
You are welcome. Btw, I am definitely intending to keep the Jazz until it is no longer economical to repair it. It is such a great car, the "magic seats" make it so versatile, the CVT performs so well while maintaining the economy. I love this car.
-
Just an update! My CVT transmission is working basically perfect. No judder whatsoever. Huge money saver with this aftermarket fluid!
Westway are closed until 4th of September if anyone needs to do CVT flush on theirs MK1. Could not recommend their CVT oil highly enough!
