Title: Hi from The Netherlands
Post by: Marco1979 on November 09, 2022, 05:18:03 PM
Hi everyone,

In the Netherlands, we used to have a Honda Hybrid Forum, but it was shut down about a year ago because lack of activity. I have been reading clubjazz ever since, but I finally decided to join.

I'm Marco1979 and I drive a Crystal Red Crosstar. Bought it new in November 2021. Very nice car, economic (4.1 l/100km so far, which is 69 MPG) over 18.000 km (11.000 miles).

Previously I owned a 2007 Civic Hybrid, a 2010 Jazz 1.2 Style Mode, a 2017 Jazz 1.3 CVT Comfort and a 2019 Jazz 1.5 CVT Dynamic.

I hope to read a lot of interesting stuff here and when I can contribute I will not hesitate to do so. If you have questions: just ask :).

Sometimes things do not go entirely as planned...

Because of long delivery times (> 1 year, depending on your choice), I started to look around for my next car in February. Why? Probably midlife crisis :P. But the usage of the Crosstar changed considerably. No short distances any more, due to another job that came with a public transport business card. Only longer trips to family and during holidays, no more cramped parking in city centers (at least, not that often). So more comfort, more economic on higher speeds and more luggage space would be welcome. And very important: no SUV.

First I went to Toyota. Looked at the new Prius; very cramped inside and after depleting the battery it is not that economic any more (WLTP says 4.6 l/100km). Then looked at the Corolla Touring Sport. Very nice car, roomy, good pricing, also around 4.6 l/100km. And then I went for a test drive :o. The fifth generation of the Toyota Hybrid Drive does something similar the e:HEV does: charging the battery at constant speeds and then depleting the battery by driving bits on EV only. This was quite a shocking experience (literally). You could easily notice these switching moments. Not as smooth as an e:HEV at all. Bummer! Also a lot of road noise entered the car at highway speeds, even with the more comfortable smaller tires. So this was an absolute no-go.

After coming home, I made a list of optimal combinations I would like to have: preferably e:HEV, larger than the Jazz, a bit lower and longer, as comfortable and nice to steer as the Corolla. I did not even consider a Honda Civic, but while driving around in the Corolla I saw one 'in the flesh' and it stuck in my mind. And I looked up the specifications: the elegance model has other tires and is much more into economy and comfort than its more sporty versions. But there is a problem: it went on sale in September 22 (in NL) and was cancelled in November 22 due to shortages and very high demands in other parts of the world. Only a handful were delivered in The Netherlands. Elegances for sale in NL: 0. And you cannot order a new one any more. Damn!

A few weeks later I saw an elegance model for sale, imported from Denmark. 1 year old, 10,000 km on the clock. I went there for a test drive: I was amazed at how well this actually drives, the engine is more refined than the 1.5 and really goes when you want it to. But wat impressed me most: I drove the exact same route as I did with the Crosstar on the exact same day and it was 0.2 l/100km more economic :D.
Unfortunately the dealer was not very willing to sell the Civic. They did not offer a reasonable amount for the Crosstar, so there the story ended.

After a good night's sleep, I decided to try another option: I emailed my own dealer (Wesselink Apeldoorn) and told them I test drove a Civic. I asked if they could help import a Civic elegance, preferably in blue or if they knew when it would be for sale in future. Their response was unexpected: "we have but 1 Civic in stock, it came in a few weeks ago, but the customer who ordered it in September 22 became tired of waiting and cancelled the order (and went for an HR-V). It is blue and it is an elegance! You can have it for the original 2022 pricing".
Combined with a much better offer for my Jazz Crosstar I now have a new blue Civic 8).

I will be around on this forum (because I like the friendly people, their helpfulness, politeness, the jokes and overall coziness) to share my experiences.
Thank you, Crosstar, for being my car for 2,5 years and 40,000 pleasant kilometers. You will find a new caring owner soon.

The Civic now has 5,000 kilometers on the clock, mostly due to a trip to the south of France. So I got to know it a bit better.

The e:hev system is more refined than in the Jazz. The engine is quieter and is off for longer. At 90 kmph (55ish mph) you can drive 2500 meters on electricity and charging takes about 1100 meters. As smooth as the Jazz, but more economic. Engine was off at least 60% of time and distance.
Going downhill there is more electric braking, nicely controlled by the flappy paddles. Once the battery is full, engine braking is used but you do not hear it at all (the system graphic does show it). This is an improvement :).
Also an improvement is that the engine does not come on as often on a cold start. It lets you drive out of your street on electric power only.

On the highway, around 110 to 120 kmph (60 to 70 mph) consumption was 4.5 l/100km. Except when very windy and rainy, then it would go up to 5.5ish.
Now that the Civic has some more miles on the clock it becomes more economic: last 2 weeks back in the Netherlands it managed 3.27 l/100km which is a whopping 86 mpg  :o. The trip computer is spot on, same values as when filling up and calculating it. The Jazz always was too optimistic. My full tank record in the Jazz was 3.45, so it seems to be even more economic. Amazing! (btw: all on Shell Vpower e5)

So far no negative experiences encountered!

Sweet memories...

Today I found one of my previous cars online, for sale in The Netherlands: see  autowereld.nl (https://www.autowereld.nl/honda/jazz/1-2-trend-origineel-nl-trekhaak-pdc-15-lmv-goed-onderhouden-41254122/details.html).
I bought this Jazz new in 2010 and drove it until 2014. A total of 101,000 km with an average fuel consumption of 4,57 l/100km. I really loved the car! Around 70,000 I changed the wheels (front tyre had a bulge on it and others had only little lifespan left) and bought Insight alloys. I really liked the way it looked. In 2014 I got a company car, so I had to trade it in. Shouldn't have, really.
101,000 km in 4 years without any malfunction, only regular maintenance. A good and reliable car!

A few things that come to mind:
I went to New Zealand for 8 weeks and when I returned the car started immediately! A bit of a rough idle (at -5, a layer of snow on top) but only for 10 seconds.
Also I had to move a very old caravan (brick shaped). The 1.2 could accelerate quite well in first and second gear, but 80 kmph (50 mph) could not be done in 4th, it had to be in 3rd. That was how bad the air resistance of the caravan was. I only needed to move it 10 km, so not a problem.

If you are located in The Netherlands and you are looking for a good 2010 Jazz: it is now for sale, only 15 years old, 168,000 km on it and for 1/3 of the original price! It had 3 owners, second owner did 25,000 in 5 years, while the third owner did 40,000 during the next 5 years.

Just returned from a 20-day trip to Scotland. As a preparation, I changed km to mph on the car’s computer. Easy peasy: traffic sign recognition was good (except when in situations where a countdown was done: 30 mph in 300, 200, 100 yards which the car did not understand).

Some remarkable things: very nice and friendly folk in Scotland AND a lot of Honda’s (much more than in NL). Most were Jazzes, but I also saw lots of HR-V and CR-V and some Civics. There must be a connection: more nice people - more Honda’s or the other way around  :D. Also I received compliments about my car and its color (blue Civic ehev).
Also, I was wondering, does it ever rain at all? Did not experience it  :P.

Now I have some more experience with mpg rather than l/100km. Around town and doing 40-ish I could do 85 mpg. Total average was 75 mpg, but I did stick to 60, also on the Motorway.

Btw: I would highly recommend Scotland as a holiday destination: Cairngorms are beautiful, coastal areas too, black isle is just lovely and also all the abbeys and rivers near the borders. I will be back some day for the other parts!

I live in East Sussex in the south east of England and we get loads of Dutch visitors in the summer.

The e:hev hybrid recently got company: a white Honda Civic Wagon 1.3 5-speed manual from 1981 purchased as an oldtimer. I blame midlife crisis  :P. Some pictures for my fellow car enthousiasts:

It is lovely to drive. Its 60 horsepower feels like a bit more due to the low weight. No beeps, no steering corrections, just simple driving as it is supposed to be. With a bit less comfort and economy. It makes you appreciate driving more, but once you switch back to a hybrid that also makes you enjoy the drive train and comfort more. Best of both worlds, so to say.

What a beauty! I like the combination of white exterior and blue interior. And as a car, I'd prefer that over new Jazz if there were full spare support.

That is *GORGEOUS*! You are definitely doing the midlife crisis the right way!

I bet it drives beautifully on those well-maintained Dutch roads... :)
