Honda(UK) have now confirmed that the height of the front passenger seat on the new HR-V is fixed and cannot be adjusted. This is just like the new Jazz/Crosstar. I cannot understand why Honda would not make the seat height adjustable, they must have al the ‘bits’ because they make both right and left hand drive HR-V’s. This is almost beyond belief and has put a serious question mark over the suitability of the HR-V for my wife who has a back problem and needs high seating position.
Why????
-
Interesting, do driver’s seat from European Jazz can be fitted in RHD version as passenger seat …..
Bu the way have to say about this mechanism - it’s flimsy mine already failed and about to be replaced by dealer
Part of the problem is my weight but this first car that have height adjustment of seat failed
When I adjusting height it slip’s sometimes, my weight is ~100kg …..
-
Well that is a deal breaker for me. Decision made, I'm keeping my old model and Honda have just lost a sale because of a ridiculous decision on their part. So easy to fit one from a left hand drive and can't be that expensive either.
-
I have had no problem so far. I am about the 100kg

Yes but after paying almost£23,000 for a car I don't expect to have to add a foam pad to overcome what is a penny pinching omission by Honda.

I wonder if the adjustable seat just has a different base frame from the non adjustable type ,but shares the same upholstered part of the seat. If so the base frames might be interchangeable as a nut and bolt job.
If so Honda could, if they chose, supply just the adjustible base frame as a dealer fitted option. Save on bulk and shipping costs. Wouldnt be cheap though as there is probably a lot of work what with air bags and stuff. Maybe the necessary frame parts are already available as spare parts for repairing faulty mechanisms.
Far better to have had it as standard, rather than trying to save a few grammes in weight and a few yen in cost differential. Or as an optional extra, although this would complicate vehicle availability. It could end up being like some Ford models where they say there are so many possible option permutations there are no two cars alike.
To be fair Honda are not alone in this type of cost cutting.
Someone might eventually make an after market option. You can already buy simple universal height raisers that might work on some cars such as spacers and longer bolts to raise the frame 2 or 3 cm off the floor and modified seat rails. But whether this is feasible on Jazz/crossstar/Hr-v I dont know. There is a lot of wiring, airbags, petrol tanks, Plastic mouldings and stuff. I doubt a honda dealership would even consider doing the job.

... Not everyone sees it like that though and has been mentioned Honda isn't the only manufacturer to do this. Are they all 'penny pinching'?
They can add a power tailgate but not an adjustable seat? There must be more to it than that!
If it's the only thing stopping you from buying the car, and can be sorted with a cheap and simple fix is seems daft to let it prevent a purchase.

True, but there are many options on the market competing with the Jazz. My point is that it seems penny pinching to omit a feature that most of its competitors have as standard. In my case my wife needs a high seating position because of back problems - Crosstar’s driver seat at highest was okay but passenger seat (where she sits most of the time) wasn’t okay. We are hoping the height of the HR-V’s passenger seat will be high enough in it’s standard setting but until we try one there is no way of knowing.

It is what it is...... :)

Indeed it is.

I doubt a honda dealership would even consider doing the job.
My Honda-dealer did the job as part of the car purchase.

Are you saying they raised the height of a non adjustable seat? If so how did they do it? Using Honda parts?
-
They raised the seat with spacers. Other than that I don't know. I wasn't there when they did the job.
You could ask your dealer if they can get information from my dealer: https://www.honda-wesselink.nl/ons-bedrijf/vestigingen/apeldoorn

Our experience is that the comfort of the passengerseat does not only depend on whether it is adjustable. My previous cars had adjustable passengerseats, but my wife always had backproblems on long distances. In the Jazz she does not suffer from that.
The combination of physique and chair seems to be more important in her case. And that just happened to work out well in the new Jazz.
-
I am flabbergasted that a dealership would even consider a modification to the seats. They are laying themselves wide open to prosecution in the event of injury to a person using that seat if something fails, during a vehicle crash for instance.
-
It’s not the comfort of the seat once she is in it that’s the problem. It’s the drop into it and the climb out of it! Ideally she needs a seat at about 650 - 660mm height from the road surface so that she can slide in and slide out without bending down too much. The Crosstar drivers seat set to max height is approx 639mm which is just about okay. Passenger seat at 588mm is just too low.
Looking at the new HR-V I can’t find the actual numbers but based on previous model and press releases on ride height we are estimating a ride height of about 655-660 mm - of course we won’t know till we see one or RIDC conduct their tests.
-
The option of a height adjustable passenger seat would be great but wouldn't be necessary if the standard seat was at a sensible height to start with. Everyone seems to agree that the existing seat is far to low.
-
Why don't you just find a company that modifies cars for disables drivers/ passengers and find out how much they would charge to raise the seat of a new Jazz by 50mm or whatever you need. The work done has to be safe and comply with regulations.
Personally I would just fit longer bolts and fabricated spacer blocks myself, an easy enough job for any competent person.
You would then have a choice of all the cars you desired without concerns about seat height.

Most sensible suggestion yet!
-
Apart from my post about liabilities you need to take care modifying a car that is still under guarantee.
-
The reason why I wouldn’t modify the seat height myself is precisely because it would/could invalidate warranty and I would have to declare to insurance company, and that could create all sorts of problems.
-
Well I wrote to the CEO of Honda(UK) asking about the lack of passenger seat height adjustment on the Jazz, Crosstar and new HR-V. Got a polite reply today...
"I have spoken with our Business Planning Department to discuss your enquiry. They have advised that there is no demand globally for this feature and therefore it is unlikely to be added to any of the models.”
So there you are then, no-one wants height adjustable passenger seats! So their competitors who are fitting them are wrong and Honda are right! People on this forum who need a height adjustable passenger seat are all wrong because there is no demand!
The arrogance of the reply is unbelievable - if that is the way Honda treats customers then I will have to rethink my planned purchase.
-
It’s apparently a standard feature on the base model vw polo, so likely also on the vw t-cross as that’s a raised polo just like the crosstar/jazz.
T-cross is a direct competitor.
I can see Honda losing sales to competitors unfortunately for silly things that should be easy /cheap to fix.
For example, disabling RDMS on the jazz involves a button by your knee and going through different menus and pressing a few buttons. On the t-cross it’s a press of a steering wheel button and the ok button. Easy to do and explain.

You don't need to use the button by your knee, however it is a "shortcut" (once that button, once the rotary button, home button). The other possibility is going through the menu.
In my view easy. However... I never switched it off (till now), so maybe it's more difficult than I think.
Once I should try... ;)
-
I had one difficult journey because I forgot to turn RDMS off.
Now I know exactly how to turn RDMS off I can safely do it whilst driving if I forget.
-
Just checked and the Toyota Yaris Cross has height adjustable passenger seat. Probably most direct competitor and I would have thought Honda would want to match such a simple feature.

All the effort Honda put into engineering excellence only to be let down by an incompetent ,'business planning department'. If you fail to plan you plan to fail. Presumably by 'global' demand they have been lazy or lack the vision to look beyond local demand in Japan and China etc where buyers are mostly younger with different priorities.
Maybe on the Asian market the cost savings per 1000 cars produced outweighs a few lost sales.
In europe more potential buyers will see it as an absolute deal breaker, or part of an accumulation of missing features that makes them look elsewhere.
If their European CEO's raise the concerns of potential customers they are fools to ignore them.
Maybe a more senior or wider thinking Honda executive will read this and sort them out.

I hope so, watching Honda die in the UK from such arrogance is so sad. As you say people won't buy a car they or their partner can't be comfortable with. No matter how good the technology.

The level of equipment fitted to basic car models took a quantum leap when Japanese cars came on the scene. people like BMW have a basic car and a massive list of extras. Seems to me a lot of these 'problems' are definitely in the 'first world problem' basket, we have to work out the carbon footprint of a 'height adjustable passenger seat'.

You cannot be serious! The carbon footprint of a height adjustable linkage will be infestiminal in the car as a whole. The latest info I have read advises that a modern EV has to be driven 70,000 miles plus to equate with a modern ICE car. It’s all down to energy etc. required to mine, extract and purify the elements and make the batteries and car as a whole.

LOL - it was meant to be a Joke, you should know my feelings on zero carbon / climate change malarkey by now.
