Title: Trouble connecting Android smart phone to 22YM car
Post by: Neil Ives on September 27, 2021, 06:25:00 PM
I've bought an Android (Eight) phone. I've installed Android Auto on the phone. I'm having problems with the connection to the car. I'm using the USB cable supplied with the phone to connect to the data-enabled USB socket in the car. When I think I've followed the instructions I briefly see the expected Android icon show up on the cars Home screen but then the screen goes black. When I refresh the screen, the Android icon is not there.
Will someone who has got this working give me an idiots guide to the setting up, please. Thank you.

I'm no expert, but I'd be checking the phone has Android auto installed, not sure it was standard on Android 8.

Change the cable if you can, some USB cables are for charging only and won't carry data

Check the settings on the phone to make sure the USB port is configured to transfer data, and not just charge.

Android auto may not appear as an app on your phone. Type it in to the search bar on phone, or to to the Google play store to make sure installed at latest version

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.projection.gearhead&hl=en_GB&gl=US&referrer=utm_source%3Dgoogle%26utm_medium%3Dorganic%26utm_term%3Dandroid+auto+android+8

I have 3 yr old Samsung that has android 11 and works fine. Yet to get it to connect wirelessly.
Older phone, older Android version could well be freezing up.
I get black screen for a few seconds before it appears on car display. Once you plug in ish cable do you see the connect smart phone icon change to a.auto?

After posting my question I had another try. The icon changes on the car display, I was even able to open Google maps briefly but the screen went black and when it came back the icon had reverted back to the Smart Phone connection icon. I was within range of my home WiFi, so the phone had access to data from both WiFi and 4G do you think that might be a problem?

I think your problem is a commutations issue between the phone and car, rather than a data issue.

Have you enabled USB debugging on your phone ?

https://joyofandroid.com/how-to-enable-usb-debugging-on-android/

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will post, but that's where I'd be looking.

When there have a look for USB options, if there's one for MTP ( Media Transfer Protocol ) have that enabled.

Android 8 (Oreo) is ancient nowadays, dating back to 2017.

I bought a cheap smart phone mainly to use in the car. My normal phone is a simple PAYG jobbie. I don't need a smart phone enough to warrant spending hundreds of pounds on it.

Android Auto is installed on the phone.

I don't use Android Auto on my MY22 so I can't help.

I prefer to have a music USB stick in the relevant port instead.

After connecting I'm seeing the Android Auto icon on my cars screen but the screen soon goes black, (crashing?) and when the screen reappears the AA icon has gone.

Have you got access to another more recent phone to try and see which side is failing ?

AA has been updated many times and even though the headunit is Android 8 it might require a newer AA version.

On my Galaxy S10 AA isn't an app anymore but built in.

Edit: Just been looking at the manual and it does say Android 9 and before should work with the AA app. Does the AA app have all permissions enabled ?

Also, try another USB cable, some are wired for charging only and some are charging and data transfer.

The manual says the cable should be USB-IF compliant.

No I do not. My son has an iPhone. It might be useful to try that.

Are you saying that I might be able to update the car software? I have installed the latest version of AA on the phone.

As far as I can tell.

I don't think it can be the cable because I am getting some success; see this video :

I would definitely try another cable, it may be wired correctly by have a loose connection somewhere. At least then you will have eliminated that element of the issue.

I generally start Android Auto on the phone before plugging into the car and I always have data switched on rather than using wifi. After a few seconds the button icon on the screen changes to "Android Auto" and you should be ok.

I have many USB leads at home. I'll see if I've got this size of connector.

I see you are using a Huawei phone ?

I wonder if some parts of it have been crippled by Google after the trust issues ?

Purely a guess though as I know new Huawei phones don't have Google elements like maps

That thought crossed my mind also. I would have thought it would not work at all if that were the case. It is a 3 year old model. Does that predate the security thing? It appears to be new but may have been refurbished I suppose.

Don't need to do anything in the car to get to that stage other than set the display to the home page. Then just press the "Android Auto" button to continue

Have you tried the cliche IT answer for everything? Turn the phone completely off and on again. I know my iPhone can perform strangely at times when the up time has been quite long. Caches full etc.

Side issue :

My daughter used to work in Green Park Reading and her office window overlooked Huawei HQ.

99% of people entering and leaving the site were of Chinese appearance. The 1% didn't seem to be employees as their arrival departure was short and mid day so probably just a meeting.

I gave that a try but to no avail. Thank you.
I can now report that Android Auto will start on the car but keeps dropping out after a few minutes I need to try and find out if my phone or the car is at fault.

You are not alone with Huwaei AA issues it seems.

The tip here is to enable USB debugging as already mentioned  :

Why is this an issue?

CCP has a record of planting spies in their overseas factories and also universities to siphon off intellectual property.  Forget about Russian spies, China is the real threat.

Given the trust issue and why Huwaei has been banned from any more and/or existing 5G work I found it interesting that their UK HQ only appears to employ Chinese.

What have they got to hide ?

Just my view and those in some Green Park firms who have all mentioned it in the past, looks suspicious but could be perfectly innocent.

Doesn't seem to me like they are hiding, if it is plain for all to see.

Personally, I trust the Chinese as much as I trust the Russians and the Americans.

The phone is beautiful and came with a decent battery charge so I was able to get going quickly. As you say, the phone comes with Android 10 so Android Auto is already installed. The phone carried out a few updates including Google maps. I plugged the phone into the data/USB socket in the car and everything worked; much better navigation than Garmin. Lovely jubbly! Thanks again for the tip.   :-*

I'll see if it will work wirelessly as per the tip from Roman. I don't really mind if it doesn't; keeping the phone on charge seems a good idea.

I tried the wireless USB, but found it pretty undependable, ended up getting some 6 inch USB cables from Amazon which work a treat,

Update: Android Auto stopped working! My phone had automatically updated from Android 10 to 11. Also, I'd set the car to connect with my WiFi and allowed the car to update it's OS.

I had a search online and one suggestion was to reset the car to its factory settings. I did that. The Bluetooth pairing between car and phone took place again and AA seems to be OK now.

One frustration is that I cannot open Android Auto on the phone; it's now embedded in the operating system so doesn't have a launch icon. If AA is working on the car you can tap a setting button on the car and that opens AA on the phone where you can see some limited settings.

Google Play offers an AA version that opens on the phone screen but I don't know if it's installing a second version of the app or just adding the functionality to open the app on the phone.

I used to have this before the Jazz - it's a separate app, so you can use Android Auto on the phone screen in a phone mount in a car that doesn't have a main screen/Android Auto function.

I believe they are dropping it though unfortunately in future.

I will be doing that when I don't need Android Auto.

I've downloaded some voice, (Podcast) files to my phone and AA plays them. I haven't yet tried playing music files from the phone.

Bluetooth audio will play music from the phone of course.

Although the service menu on the Jazz offers a wireless connection for Android I haven't been able to make it work yet.

TBH I have no need for anything on the AA menu. The only app I might have relayed is Google Maps but as per another thread I've hardwired in my Garmin DS61 and the Smartlink traffic on that is good.

I also find the Garmin, on dash top, is more in my line of sight whereas the centre infotainment screen - isn't.

It's being replaced with 'Assistant Driving Mode' which is powered by Google Maps but contains all the existing features.

Whether this is backwards compatible for Honda, who knows

Android Auto will still exist for cars. The stand alone (phone only) AA mode is deprecated in favour of Google Assistant.

...Picked the car up this evening  :D Had a quick go but was unsuccessful getting Android Auto to work, wired or wireless. Updated to Android 12 this morning so assuming that's the culprit as I was able to connect wirelessly on Android 11 in the test drive vehicle.

Anyone had any success with Android 12?

Phone is Pixel 3 xl.
