Title: Alloy Wheel Corrosion
Post by: Ozzie on December 10, 2020, 06:54:33 PM
Hi All,

On my previous Jazz Hybrid, some of the paint started bubbling on one of the alloy wheels. I had a moan at the main dealer and the wheel was replaced, the car was 3 years old and 108,000 miles, and at 5 years old I had all the wheels refurbished at 220,000 miles.

Moving forward and this Jazz (2015) has now started to have paint blistering on the front alloys at 130,000 miles, however at 5 years old I am thinking I may struggle to get the wheels replaced this time, but if you don't ask, you'll never know.

Anyone else having corrosion issues on the alloys??

After having problems with alloy wheel corrosion ( including slow air loss ) I decided about 5 or 6 years ago to get winter tyres on steel rims and wax and store the alloys in garage over winter - the steel rims not really bothered by winter and if they are a quick rub down and coat of hammerite fixes them up ( the only corrosion I have seen on steel rims is where the wheel trims contacted the rims, so I no longer use wheel trims ).  Skidding into things is more likely in winter as well, not so bothered about hitting a steel rim as i would be about scuffing or cracking an alloy.

The 16" diamond cut OEM alloys on wifes Jazz Si did not last long before the white worm started burrowing, so they are gathering dust in the garage - and car has steel rims in winter and 15" alloys for summer, and the ride is improved ( and the cost of tyres reduced by at least 40% ).

I had to bother with the alloys on my Volvo and ended up getting them restored. Like culzean, I was losing air, and after they were restored I never had to top a tyre up.

The ball is rolling, Honda UK have asked me to pop in to the local Honda Dealership for the wheels to be inspected.

Booked in for Dec 17th, for a photo shoot.

I think it's good that Honda are prepared to look at it. Fingers crosssed for you.  :)

What has happened since your visit to your  Honda dealer after they inspected your wheels and took photos of the corrosion?
I have 2014 HX Jazz with very corroded insides. Corrosion was well established by 2018.
My photos are too large to post.
