I was chatting to my scrap man recently, when he told me how much they were paying for mk1 Jazz cats, it all made sense.

My son's girlfriend is using my 2005 Jazz SE and as she drove off today the exhaust sounded blowy. I am going to have to see if the cat has gone when she gets back.

If it didn't sound like a Formula 1 car then the exhaust is just blowing. I started a car I was working on, with the cat removed, and near sh@t myself. There is no mistaking it. Plus if the cat is missing the sensors are missing and the ECU does its thing with warnings and the like.

;D  Yes, it is rather loud!

Back in 1986 my Triumph Spitfire exhaust became detached from the manifold (it's a long story, will tell if asked) and for one fun day it sounded like I imagine a real Spitfire might have sounded, at least to me sitting three feet behind it with the lid down.

I know, I drive a Toyota hybrid and the other car is a 2005 Jazz. I am in double jeopardy!

Is a particular mark of Jazz more prone to being targeted than others?

Vic.

Pre 2008, i.e. 1st Gen.

From the BBC article (second link) ...

Honda has a different take on the matter - it says that Honda Accord and Jazz models from 2008 onwards come with a tray under the car to make it harder for thieves to get at the catalytic converter.
And in car models from 2015 onwards, the catalytic converter has been placed within the engine bay, so a thief would need to disassemble the car to get at it.

My car is very seldom parked anywhere it is likely to get targeted but when I do I manually switch my dashcam on. The battery doesn't last a huge time but there is always the chance I catch the culprits on video. I had considered a live feed from the battery but that starts to get complicated.

Easiest way around that is to feed it via a rechargeable power bank, they are quite cheap now for a decent capacity that would keep the cam going for days.

No chance of flattening the starting battery either.

The trouble is these cretins look for dashcams and will get to the vehicle from the side  to remove it, oh, and they are not bothered to jack it up on the jacking point either, they jacked mine on the floorpan after ramming it into the door and sill :o
I hide my car as best as I can now, its not in plain sight when you drive up my street. The trouble is I dare not leave it for long anywhere except work where it cannot be got at.

Unfortunately, as Denis says, it's probably doubtful that a dashcam will deter them. They don't care. I've mentioned before that there are even cases where people have been physically threatened when they have tried to intervene.

On another thread, I mentioned looking at cars at Copart sites, where most of the insurance salvage goes now. You now see quite a few mk1 Jazzes going through, written off after being relieved of their cats, every week.

My exhaust suddenly started blowing on Sunday and that was the first thing I checked too.

It wasn't, just the midsection failed where a bracket was attached. £85 fitted seemed reasonable for the replacement.

I don't think it will deter them, it may just catch an image the police can use. I don't park in car parks, other than my local supermarket where I park under the CCTV. I always park as close to the kerb as I can and the car is never left for long as I don't need to park for long. My car is normally garaged.
The few incidents that have been reported locally have all been in long term parking areas such as railway stations and hospitals.

It won't just sound 'a bit blowy'  it will sound as if WW3 has started under the car,  had an exhaust fail in the past before the first box and there is no way you can ever mistake that sound.......

Yep. I had a MK1 for a short while and the box went at the join. Sounded more like a Chieftain tank, albeit the early version with the dreadful Leyland engine that kept breaking down on manouevres. Usual MOD pencil neck price shortcutting to save precious beans for their Xmas bonus while our boys training in the frontline were reduced to thumbing a lift back to camp.

It would be nice to think so, thieving scallywags.  >:(

I think that's the best you can do, it will put the majority off. The few remaining that don't care about any of that, well, you're not going to stop them anyway.

I might still go the rebar down the front pipe route, when the weather improves. It will stop those equipped with the manual exhaust pipe cutters dead in their tracks, which must be the vast majority of them.

Last night there were three Ford Fiestas stolen from Tranent and Musselburgh. Not old ones, but 16 and 17 plate vehicles. Makes worries about cat thefts pale a little.

Just ordered one from Amazon. Thanks.
It arrived this afternoon and is currently on charge. It will be great with the i-pod as well, as it keeps going flat before I get to Danderhall and back, unless I unplug one of my gadgets and plug the i-pod in (Gadgets: Dash cam, sat nav, GPS speedometer).

That is because of my final gadget, my ScanGauge E which plugs into the OBD port.

I bought a 13Ah one a year or two back, about the size of a fag packet. It's been invaluable, and the other half pinches it when she goes hiking.

20Ah is enormous really, I can't see a dashcam taking a great deal.

was it this one ...

I use powerbank to use my car satnav when walking - it does 'off road' ( straight line between where your are and where you are trying to go ) - normally know where I am going when out hill walking but the weather can close in so fast and leave you in thick fog / cloud - also useful to get a position co-ordinate if you need emergency services - my present power banks are smaller than this one ( 2.5Ah ) as I have had them donkeys years - probably about time I upgraded as the price has come down a lot now.

According to manual pwer requirement of 312GW is 1.5amps at 5 volts  and the 3.7V 450mAh internal battery is good for 30 minutes of recording - so looks like it needs more than you would expect - whether the power is for the GPS chip or just the video chip / processing bit I don't know.

That's it. Took a while to charge up with my phone charger, so I have ordered a 2A USB charger, as it recommends.

So fully charged it should last about 18 to 20 hours ?  says in Nextbase manual that the 3.7V  450mAh internal battery lasts about 30 minutes which gives 950mAh drain from power bank, although powerbank supplies power at more than 3.7 volts ( should a USB socket give 5 volts DC ).  Be interesting to know how long it lasts....

Cannot see it ever getting fully discharged. Never have to leave car for more than 2 hours. When Madge gets her Chemo I normally wait until she is all hooked up, then come home. I then pop back for the last hour and then bring her home. Parking is s nightmare at the hospital so I park in a street that has a 2 hour max stay. Don't want to get another ticket!

If it has GPS, those chipsets are known to gobble up a bit of power. I would think some of the headroom on the supply is for the initial charging of the battery, but if you can get around 24 hrs out of it, I would think it would be enough.

Not sure why you wouldn't just use your phone for this, unless it's a Nokia 3310 or something  ;D . The What Three Words app can give you a precise location which it is then very easy to pass to the emergency services if necessary.

These sort of devices usually use efficient DC-DC converter circuits, rather than simple voltage regulators which dissipate the excess voltage out as heat. You should hopefully be able to get a few more hours out of it, if the battery capacity is accurate.

As I said I very seldom park for more than 2 hours. so 4 hours capacity would do me. There were larger capacity Power Banks available, but the one I chose gave sufficient capacity at a good price (£18.99).
