Title: Honda diagnostic charge.
Post by: VicW on September 16, 2019, 02:41:38 PM
I phoned my local Honda dealer this morning to book my car into the workshop for the left hand door mirror to be looked at, it doesn't fold.
I was told that there would be a diagnostic charge of £114 and that the repair charge would be on top of that.
I declined the offer, not very politely.
The rest of the mirror functions OK so I guess the car won't be living in the garage this winter.

Enquire with a local Auto Electrician. They don't have a massive showroom and workshop to pay for.

I took my Volvo S40 to the auto electrician recommended to me, and he only charged for the repair, not the diagnostics. He also gave me a warning about the state of my battery.

Good evening Vic,

Probably not what you want to read:

Similar problem on a Civic:

We only fold our occasionally(2010 Si).

Hope you manage to get it sorted.

Sounds like its the Honda diagnostic money earner charge for 1 hr work of looking at a screen then ordering a £300 mirror for you.
I would look around your local vehicle dismantles for same colour mirror unit

My son found a replacement LH door mirror assembly on EBay. It's from a vehicle dismantler and is guaranteed. We'll see when it arrives. It was £96 and is the right colour so that's a bonus.

We were offered a diagnostic at £140 when the dealers visual health check failed to find the reason the car was squealing.  Seems the dealer had never heard the acoustic brake wear indicator before.

I had a "word" with the service manager and he got someone to look a bit more carefully, and we weren't asked to pay the diagnostic charge (although we did pay the absurdly named Honda Happiness price for new pads and discs).

Dealer was careful not to apologise but sending daughter out with a car with a stuck and worn out brake pad isn't acceptable to me, particularly when they've been asked to check the car.  Neither the dealer nor Honda seemed bothered by either the pad sticking or their failure to spot it.

Seems to me that if the new breed of dealer techs cannot find the problem on a laptop then they are stuffed,  don't seem to have any idea of 'go-look-see' method that involves the risk of getting hands dirty...

Problem is the vehicle health check is an on-the-ground walkaround, but really, when the screech had been pointed out to them I'd have expected them to know straight away what it was, even though unexpected at the mileage the car had done.

I reckon the range of diagnostic between £90-150 per hour, not bad for a 20 second connect tap tap job.

The laptop is usually followed by random stabs at parts replacement, it can get very expensive when they don't know what they are doing. Of course you sign to say that you agree for the work to be carried out, not for any particular result.

The mirror arrived exactly when forecast. It was in better condition than mine and worked perfectly and fitted without hassle, it helps that my son had done one before. Although the mirror assembly came from E-Bay the breakers were a firm called Synetiq (synetiq.co.uk).

Synetiq supply pictures of the part on offer, the spec of the vehicle it comes from and a picture of the donor vehicle.
