Engine mounting stud broken
« on: June 23, 2018, 08:32:34 PM »
Sorry but I cannot load any photo but the forum wont let me but I have a broken eng mtg stud where there are two studs through a alloy casting the one that is left has a point to it so I guess the other one that missing would also be pointed
it looks like I will be able to remove the casting to get access to the broken stud. Does any one know what size and thread the stud is please.
Hopefully all I will need is a good stud remover and plenty of freeing agent

Done it found how to add photo thanks
Cheers

Is that the only bit of the stud that is accessible? Drilling it out will not be easy due to the casting being soft.

Can you (or a helpful friend) place a nut about the same size on the broken stud and weld inside through to the broken stud? The heat from the weld will help crack the corrosion in the thread. Wait for it to cool for a short while before having a wiggle at it. Once it's out, you can check the thread.

You might struggle to remove the stud otherwise, the thread will probably be corroded due to dissimilar metals.

Failing that, a trip to the scrappers is in order.

I think the biggest problem will be steel stud - alloy casting = corrosion, hopefully once I support the engine and get the alloy bracket off and yes welding a nut on is good idea I was thinking along the line of buying a stud extractor and either a visit to a scrap yard or buy a set bolt of said diameter and thread.
I will disconnect the battery first to stop any peaks, surges

hi the stud on the left does not have nut on the top, like the one on the right as a pointed nut , the one on the left  as a nut under the mounting  thats why it lookes like it as sheered off.dave

Just had a brain wave in the heat wave Rung up two Honda parts dealers asked them if there are two studs in the front engine mounting Cause I thought it could be a mounting locating dowel for the engine and surprise surprise YES its a dowel so no need to take the mounting off just leave well alone  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Im mid oil/spark plug change and I remembered your post about the sheared off stud.

Fret not, my wifes car is exactly the same as yours, guess thats how they were assembled.

The shiny bolt head with a wire coming off is an additional earthing wire which I added-
