Does it work (ie blow cold)?

Is the sound from under the bonnet? If so, sounds like the aircon clutch, which engages the compressor when cooling is required.

 Thanks for replies
Air Con blows cold OK. Air con off, heater on, nice and quiet, Switch Air Con on with heater still on, a clattering sound under bonnet. back of engine where air con unit is fitted. Somebody has said it could be aircon drive belt. Albert

it looks normal, ac condenser do really produces a bit of sound, but if its too loud and very uncomfortable something wrong with it.

With the air con switched on the air con compressor cuts in and out as required to make the system work. This means an increase in under bonnet noise when the compressor cuts in.
If the air con is working then the compressor clutch is engaging/disengaging properly.
It makes no difference whether the heater is on at the same time or not.
The compressor is driven from the same belt that drives the alternator.

It is also worth noting that when the air con is switched on,one of the radiator cooling fans starts up to cool the air con condenser.
