Tyres are in need of replacement.

I normally buy a good brand (Dunlop, in fact, because that was the original fit) but perhaps there are better brands out there, or perhaps I don't need to pay out so much.

Any recommendations?

I am currently using Yokohama BluEarth ES32, and I am very pleased with them. Currently £51.50 from Kwik Fit.

For long life get Michelin ES+ but they do lack a bit of grip,  I used to get them because i was doing over 25,000 miles a year.  I have Avon ZV7 now on Civic - not sure if they will wear as good as the Michelin but don't even do 10,000 a year now and very happy with quietness and grip, especially in the wet ( and happy with the price).  My wifes MK2 has Avons as well,  I changed the 16" wheels for 15" and ride much better, tyres much cheaper. If you have 185/55R16 wheels I am not sure if Avon make that size, check with Avon website or ATS Euromaster who stock Avons.

Would go Michelin energy saver plus, in my experience Dunlop's don't last long.
Have had Hankook ventus prime & they seemed good too .. not tried them on a Honda as yet

The problem with tyre recommendations is that if you get 20 responses, they'll all be different.

To be honest, people can get a bit sniffy about tyres. The last ones I fitted were Coopers, same manufacturer and factory as the Avons, and seem decent enough tyres. As culzean says, the Michelins are popular, wear and mpg are good, but at the expense of outright grip.

Even budget Chinese tyres are perfectly fine for most drivers, the performance, quality and compounds have come on in leaps and bounds over the last few years.

BTW, Avon ZV7 is available in 185/55x16.

Problem with the odd 185/55R16 tyres on mk2 is you had limited choice and they were all expensive - don't know if they are easier to get or cheaper now because I have not bought any recently, I changed the wheels   to 15" to improve the ride and as a bonus tyres are a lot more plentiful and cheaper by quite a big margin.

Mind you my mate had  Quasqhi and was shocked when he came to replace the tyres, they wanted £180 each for them, he managed to get some for just over £120 each but his wallet didn't recover for a while.

Have a look at asdatyres.co.uk (yes Asda really do sell tyres).  They have a good selection and all the information regarding noise and fuel consumption is well presented.  Tyre fitting can be arranged near to where you live.

I sometimes use blackcircles.com who are usually cheap or at least competitive, I usually get Yokohama's for about £50 ish. They have arrangements with local fitters and give you an appointment to attend for fitting, I've never had any issues.
They have a good website with loads of choice and lots of info.

Asda are owned by Wal-Mart, a truly massive U.S. chain store, who sell everything - literally everything....

I searched 185/55R16 and it came up with 21 tyres, the same search for 175/65R15  turned up 42.

The most expensive 15" was about 60% of cost of The equivalent 16".  From what I have read the higher profile 15" tyres wear better than the 16" because the taller sidewall allows the tread to settle onto the road more evenly. There are also people who say smaller rims give better mpg.  I paid under £60 from mytyres for Rial alloys, so saved almost the cost of new rims the first time I bought the new tyres for the 15" rather than 16"  due to much lower cost of the 15" tyres, as a bonus the ride is better.

It is worth thinking about getting new alloys if your existing 16" need refurbishing, because refurb will cost over £50 a rim, and that is almost doubled if you have the diamond cut style like my wife's Jazz had.  So after buying the new rims for basically half the cost of refurb and saving loadsa money on tyres I am actually in pocket by a useful amount.

On this thread I have posted a couple of photos ( attachment ) of Rial Milano rims on her indoors Jazz Si.

In the US the tyre depots are in-store (like Costco here), but in the the UK the Asda name is just a front for another company and they have a bit of an iffy reputation for supplying tyres which are a few years old.

From their FAQ: "All Asda tyres are new. Tyres are classed as "brand new" if correctly stored for up to 3 years and "new" for up to 5 years."

My budget wouldn't stretch to Continental Contact 6's so I got some Kumho ES01 all round two months ago. Pleased with the ride and noise level. Mine are 185/55 R15.

I had Bridgestone on my MK1 and they are currently fitted to my MK3 ex.
They have done about 23,000 miles and the front ones will need changing before next winter (approx. 28,000-30,000).
I will probably fit Bridgestone again.

Currently using Maxiss AP2 all seasons tyres. Goods value and excellent warranty. Previously using all seasons Nexen Npriz 4S who I believe has been replaced by N'Blue 4S. Again excellent value.

All seasons tyres not widely available but I buy them in the internet and get my independent garage to fit them. Comes in very handy when you have snow.

This post caused me to have a look whats on ours...Front 185/55/16...Rear 205/55/16

Anybody tell me why front tyres should be different to rear tyres? Not a tyre specialist and don' know what numbers refer, but would've thought all 4 tyres should be same size, or that 205's ( if larger in whatever way) should be on front as have to bear engine weight and smaller(!) 185 on rear?

After reading thread, hoping to be able to but 2 x 16 for around £50 apiece as now only doing approx 3k miles per year!

Ta for help.
