Replacement Aerial
« on: December 12, 2016, 01:27:22 PM »
Hi all!
I have a 2007 Honda Jazz Sport and recently bought a replacement aerial as I much prefer the "stubby" style or bee sting to the original.  However, I can't seem to find one that sizes up the same as the base unit, and the one I currently have on (an OEM one) I can't get any radio reception!
I'm looking to buy another that not only looks better than the original but actually works!! I would be interested to know what aerials people have used for their Jazz's and if any links could be given I'd greatly appreciate it!
Thanks :)

This is one from Amazon  with universal fittings. I bought one similar and had no fitting problems.
My car radio works on all the main stations with no aerial fiited at all.

I think the minimum viable aerial is about 20cm or so at 1/16th of a full wavelength to still get most stations.  The shark fins on some cars are normally active aerials and require a power supply (like most DAB aerials) so the super folded or coiled bee sting types may well be similar to be effective.

For a simple monopole aerial:
FM (Wavelength(Lambda) = Speed of Light(m/s) / Frequency(Hz))

Bottom of freq range
1 Wavelength = 3*10^8 / 87.5*10^6 = 3.4 meters.
So 1/4 wave = 86cm

Top of freq range
1 Wavelength = 3*10^8 / 108*10^6 = 2.8 meters.
So 1/4 wave = 69.4cm

For mid range 300 / 97.8 = 3.07 meters.
So 1/2, 1/4 , 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64 = 1.53m, 76.7cm, 38.3cm, 19.2cm, 9.6cm, 4.8cm etc.

As I said before my radio works without an aerial fitted but I didn't check it on all the stations I use.
So that the car fits in the garage I replaced my aerial with one that is 10cm long and it works perfectly.
