Ticking sound
« on: July 22, 2009, 02:22:55 PM »
I have a month and a half old Jazz 09.

Two weeks ago I accidentally downshifted from third to second, the engine screamed (I'm not sure if it crossed the red zone) and I immediately slammed the clutch and waited for it to calm down. Then everything seemed normal, but after some time a ticking noise started developing in second gear, at high revs (above 4500, but sometimes even lower). Also, the engine seems a little louder at any speed, though I can't notice any change in performance.

The mechanic listened to the engine and said there was no problem, but I'm not so sure.

Any suggestions? What have I damaged?

Could it be the second set of valves in the VTEC engine?

PS. A 2009 Jazz is a GE model.

Is there any way I can tell?

It's in the VIN, which is on a plate on the pillar between the front passenger door and the rear one. The fourth and fifth letters for the older model will be GD or GE for the new one. You can also use the VIN to find out the country of manufacture.

fwiw, I don't think it is correct.  I have a chinese built 2007 (57 plate) old shape Jazz SE and it begins with LUCGE3 in the VIN....!

In any case, I'm sure most ppl can spot the difference between a pre and post 2008 model   :D

Sorry, I meant how can you tell if it's the second set of valves in the engine, not what model it is :)))

I've just checked my EX, and the late2008/2009 model has a VIN of JHMGE6...

It's certainly worth noting that the 2007/early2008 model is GE3.

Interesting. Some GE models are actually 'GD's. I'll have to look into this further.

I would prefer to use the less geeky terms of first and second generation, but this thrown off course by the obscure (and very rare) 'Jazz' Honda sold in the mid '80s.
