Exhaust help
« on: August 17, 2019, 07:04:53 PM »
Hi jazz friends

Can anyone advise on this please ?  We are on holiday in France (from the uk) and the exhaust started making a loud noise on the way here. Photo attached.

If I'm seeing correctly the tail pipe has separated from the rear silencer.

1. Can this  be repaired and will it be able to resist the vibrations?

2. Or will I need to source a new rear section from the tailpipe to the joint in front of the silencer?

We are pretty noisy so any help appreciated.

...scratch that, Jocko's right - you need a new back box.

The Jazz was available in France so would it not be worth while dropping into "le Kwik Fit" or the French equivalent, and having it replaced. Cost me £138, here in UK.

Update: Think you will find that joint between middle and rear box is further forward.

Yes, you're right Jocko. The pipe is broken off the backbox, not being able to see the joint threw me a bit.

Scratch everything I said earlier, it's a backbox you need. Should be easier to source, unfortunately harder to bodge up.

I had similar happen to me. There's a flexible joint between the back box and the middle section and if it's over tightened something will give. Mine only cost £70 to replace.

Or is it? What do you think?

I needed the car there and then so I had to pop into Kwik Fit. They have you by the short and curlys.

At least you didn't have to lay underneath it saying naughty words.

I no longer lie under cars saying naughty words. I stand and watch my son-in-law while we both say naughty words!

I went on a tour of french garages today.

The first was shut for the holiday.

The second could only fit me in on Friday.

The third had broken ramps (at least I think that’s what they said ).

The fourth wanted 300 euros.

The fifth wanted 350 euros.

I’d forgotten about the french “service culture”  ;D

Time isn’t too pressing. So I’ll go for the second one hopefully. 220 euros though for a £50 part. Exchange rate doesn’t help.

I think it's usual for car parts to be quite expensive in France. Expats over there find it cheaper to have parts shipped from UK or Germany, than use the local factors.

Unfortunately, in your sad situation, they have you over a barrel.

Maybe when the French see a UK number plate they get revenge for Waterloo - and put prices up,  I suppose the Jazz is not a common car in France and unlike the French made stuff rarely needs spares so maybe its the rarity value of the parts..
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

If French memories are that far advanced, perhaps?? they should remember who there friends were during world war 2 etc etc.
plus rescues off the beaches at Dunkirk and safety in 🇬🇧 🇬🇧 🇬🇧

Just a thought. also Capitulation springs to mind.
