Title: Space shuttle mileage
Post by: Ozzie on July 06, 2013, 01:53:45 PM
I have just moved house, to Peterborough, but travel back to Herts, to teach pupils, so I now do around 300 miles a day ! So I reckon I might nudge 60k miles a year ! At the moment my Hybrid has 55k on the clock, and is 2 years old in September. Maybe time to look up "Honda High Mileage Club"  :D

How long is the round trip?  That type of driving would make me insane.  Not so much sitting in the car but avoiding the other idiots on the road

What mpg are you getting with all those miles?

Its 60 miles from Peterborough to Welwyn, then a day of driving tuition, then another 60 mile trip home. The commute is all motorway or dual carriageway, and I can do it in an hour, to hour and a half, depending on traffic, and get 55mpg on that part of the day.

I agree, but it is the distance that gives me the horrors.  The traffic in the UK is much more dense than here, which I would imagine would make it worse.

I have just done 325 miles in today, I am currently working 6 days a week, so I am doing nearly 2000 miles a week if I keep this up !  :o :o :o

Thankfully the diary is a bit quieter for August .

Now 63k, settled down to around 1000 miles a week, but only working 3-4 days a week as I had an £800 fuel bill in July, and thats with a Hybrid !

What's that in old fashioned mpg? A quick sum assuming £800 and 6k miles suggests 45mpg which seems too low for the hybrid, particularly since yours is now well loosened up.

As its used for tuition purposes, sometimes it does 60 miles in an hour, sometimes only 4 miles an hour if we are doing manoeuvres, as a guide I usually leave home at 8.30, start work at 10am, finish my last lesson at 7pm, and I am back home around 8pm. At that point the car has been running for 11.5 hours almost constantly, covered around 300 miles, and used approx £40 in fuel, or 30 (ish) litres, or 6.5 gallons, which equates to 46mpg as you say, however I prefer to think of it as 0.6 gallons per hour, or £3.60 per hour.

As a driving instructor we will never match the manufacturers mpg, however can you imagine what the mpg is when using a petrol Focus where the manufacturer claims 32mpg, realistically that would be around 24mpg as a tuition car. Thats why you need to start with a frugal car in the first place  :D

Thanks for the clarification. Even with my frugal driving style and trying to avoid short journeys with cold engines can't get near the manufacturer's claimed economy (I'm at 58.5 mpg which is only 13% better than I got with the non-hybrid Jazz).

Maybe the 2014 hybrid which is reported to have a decent sized battery will be able to provide the fuel economy that I would like.

Today I thought I would try turning OFF the air con,  and try and be a bit gentle on the trip south, so I did 65 miles averaging 59.2mpg, not bad for a rush hour trip  ;D

Nice! How long are you planning to keep it?
Title: Re: Space shuttle mileage
Post by: Ozzie on January 28, 2014, 11:20:13 PM
I intend to keep it for as long as I can, so as long as it stays reliable its good for me. Its value is going to be negligible anyway as its already at 87500 miles at 30 months old.

Hats off to you for long journeys on what is supposedly a City Car.
Cars can be what you use them for and suit your purpose.

Jazz is roomy, can sit at 60, is economical ........so drive on I say.

There are Americans on the Fit freaks forum with over 250,000 on a Jazz - one bloke recorded over 320,000.

I think you'll be OK for a while yet!

Very well done. Will it do 300k on the battery pack? The computer sems to protect them well, so should do. Taxi Prius do around 400k according to Honest John.

its a Supermini with loads of room, comfortable seats and bomb-proof mechanicals - personally I would worry more about taking long journeys in an Audi, VW, BMW or most French cars when I see the latest car reliability stats  :o

No idea, the icon on the information panel seems to show that the battery charges well, but I have no idea how accurate that is. I have had no dealer feedback on the battery status since the initial service when it was reported that the battery was fine.

Should be at 200k in the next couple of weeks. It has taken a while as I have been taking it easy for the past 8 months, our daughter has got married and moved house, our son has moved house too, so I have been busy helping them out packing, unpacking, paint this, build that, remove the other . . . . . but back on the road again now and 200k service is booked.

With the current rate it does seem like 300k may be achievable by next summer if everything like the seats are still holding up.

Digit milestones seem to be one of those childhood memories, peering over the seat as the dial creeps round. With the digital readout I prefer the '5 (or 6) of a kind' type such as 88888, sadly the likely last of these 111111 will be upon me soon, leaving the less desirable 'straight' of 123456 the only thing to look forward to but probably not under my ownership.

The drivers seat had a small tear in it, so I bought one from a breakers for £80, and had it fitted at 187,000 miles, passenger side is fine, and rear seats are perfect. Theres a few stone chips on the bonnet, and I treated the alloys to a refurbishment, otherwise all looks good for the mileage.

I did send a facebook message to Honda UK a while ago saying that I was a bit disappointed that the headlight bulb only lasted 236,000 miles  ;D ;D. They asked to be notified when my car reached 250k, which I duly did. They have messaged back asking for my email address for an article on high mileage Hondas, I won't hold my breath.

We all do around 584 million miles a year anyway, thereabouts, as we wend out way around the Solar System, not allowing for the mileage our Solar System puts in as it wanders through the Universe. By my reckoning, I have already got 33bn miles on the clock, not including those I have walked, driven or ridden.

But well done. 250,000 miles in a Jazz i impressive. Mine is still a bit short of half that.

The end of an era . . .
256,000 miles and there was a strange knocking noise from the front left side when accelerating. I took it to Honda and the mechanic calls me into the workshop and says "Its not good."
All the underneath is covered in oil, the gearbox is dry of oil and two oil seals on a driveshaft have blown. He then moves the driveshaft a couple of inches to the left and right saying that the diff has gone so it needs a new gearbox. He reckons a gearbox from a breakers is around £800 if you can find one, then we are looking at 8 hours labour to remove and refit a gearbox, and then how good will that one be?
So I have condemned it . . . . and bought another !
I'm getting a 65 reg HS-T in white !
