Buying Insurance and Breakdown separately
« on: February 13, 2024, 06:39:05 PM »
Hello,

I was wondering if it's OK to buy car insurance and breakdown cover separately, instead of both through the insurance company when getting a quote.

I haven't been driving for long, and my renewal quote from Aviva is £964.

LV have quoted £780 insurance, and with their Brittania Rescue breakdown cover it is £850.
(But I have read some bad assessments of Brittania Rescue)

I have found deals on both Start Rescue and Green Flag offering the cover I would like for £35-45.

So I'm considering the 780 insurance with LV and 35-45 breakdown separately, not just to save money but to make sure I have the right services too.

I'm just unsure if there are any negatives to buying them separately or if it's perfectly fine.

Do not buy both together, negotiate the best price & service independently.

I have had RAC cover for many years and always buy it separately from my insurance, after all, it's your money to spend as you wish.

Never auto renew, there is no loyalty from Insurance in UK these days. One company Autoaid if you have a modern less than 15 years old gets good results . Keep searching around read the article on MSE Martin Lewis

+1 for Autoaid. I've had their cover for years.

I'm with NFU and get RAC roadside assistance included, but recovery is only for up to 20 miles. I also own a couple of motorcycles and have access to other cars so I have breakdown and recovery service with GEM.
My wife uses Start Rescue for her Toyota Yaris, IIRC it's about £28 for the year includes Roadside assistance, At Home and national Recovery.
I think therefore I'm not.

Certainly don't auto renew,  and shop around for breakdown.  Take note however of reviews and particularly experience on forums like this.
Having said that,  I had separate RAC breakdown for a couple of years but one renewal I checked with my insurance Aviva and they offered the same personal breakdown cover (any vehicle car and motorbike including European cover) for about 2/3 the price,  and it is actually with RAC! Personal European breakdown for under £100 can't be bad in my book.
Moral - shop around and don't rule anything out without checking.

Thanks for all your advice. I've done a lot of searching and assessing and managed to get insurance with LV for 780 and the cover I wanted with start rescue for 30.
(Both reviews are high up there)
So that's a 140 saving from my aviva renewal quote.

I had no issues with aviva or rac (who they use), but if you can get the same/better elsewhere then why not.

I'll keep it in mind to check separately for next year :)

Hi.
When you come up for renewal next year please feel free to give us a try for insurance or breakdown cover if you wish.
