Title: Road Humps
Post by: guest5079 on November 28, 2017, 09:51:06 AM
Does my pudding for a brain deceive me of was there a move afoot to remove speed humps?
Yesterday, turned into a road in Truro, which I use once a fortnight and there was a new tarmac surface complete with bright yellow lines AND BRAND NEW SPEED HUMPS. Yes they were there before but the new ones  appear to be bigger.

They have taken out a lot of road humps, chicanes and other 'road furniture' in Shropshire, but are introducing 20mph speed limits instead.

They call them 'traffic calming measures' but they certainly don't calm drivers..

I wouldn't want them outside my house, every bit of traffic braking then accelerating away, every trailer clattering as each axle goes over the hump. All that braking and accelerating can't be good for the environment either, few seem to see the unintended consequences.

There was a bit of a movement started locally by a new resident, who was all for having road humps. I had my say, but I'm sure they thought I was some sort of nut job.

No thanks.

Cornwall County Council are going mad installing them all over, we have had a rash of them appearing locally recently, I wouldn't mind but some of them are in places where they are completely unnecessary as they are busy town roads where it was impossible to speed anyway.

Round our way it's completely bonkers. Road directly opposite our house, speed bumps all the way along. Road that runs past our house, no speed bumps at all. Even worse, near the local primary school - no speed bumps!

I think they have their place in areas like outside schools but they are a nuisance elsewhere. They even make pollution worse with all the braking and accelerating that goes on.

The road in question is a bus route, subject to a 20mph speed limit.  Buses, can pass astride the humps and certainly travel at more than 20mph in this road.
And yet, outside where my Downe's Syndrome Sister in Law lives in assisted living is the back entrance to a primary school. Come turning out time the road is completely blocked by mothers. In my Sister in Laws case she is end stage dementia, the other residents all have varying needs. Recently the Dr was called, a not infrequent occurrence, and finding the entrance to the house completely blocked asked a nice mother to move. Not only did she refuse but the Dr learned a few more 'words'.
I believe the front entrance to the school is verboten as the residents complain about the nuisance.
Still in Launceston the same occurs even blocking the entrance to the police station so what hope have you. I am afraid nothing has changed even in my day, mothers were always on about the danger to their kids BUT when it came to them parking near the school all concern went out the window.

I am merely an immigrant. Came to Cornwall in 1966, when Launceston had a market, the Town was always buzzing on Market Day. Left in 1975 and returned in 1992. Launceston dead after market closed and Tescos arrived. Houses everywhere and all to let. If the Poles return home I don't know what will happen to the housing market. We lived in a hamlet of 12 people no doors locked and when a car went through everybody came out to look. Bus on Tuesday for Market and Saturday afternoon IF Fry's of Tintagel decided to turn up. I used to deliver bread from Launceston to Wadebridge across Bodmin Moor stopping at Jamaica Inn to deliver their BRAYED and PASTYS. Good old days? Who can say Now like most incomers and locals we live in a Bungalow on an estate cos all the cottages have been bought by them money people from upcountry.
In 1966 Road humps were not even dreamed of and the traffic was controlled by Tom Sandercock who for more than 20 years stood on Treleaven's Corner and directed traffic through Southgate Arch. Now one way and chaotic.
