Title: Best Camera.
Post by: guest8014 on October 21, 2018, 04:47:32 PM
I want to get one of these. First for front and then maybe the rear. Thought I would get a slightly cheaper one first and see how it goes. Then if happy put that at the back if it is not quite up to being a font camera.

Was looking at this review https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/accessories-tyres/85714/best-dash-cams-2018-reviews-and-all-you-need-to-know (https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/accessories-tyres/85714/best-dash-cams-2018-reviews-and-all-you-need-to-know). Any advice most welcome.

One of my queries what about rain on windows. Is that a problem?

Thanks.

I got the Garmin 55 when it was on offer at just over £100 it has a good quality hd picture and is supplied with a adhesive mount. It is small enough to fit just to the left of the plastic sensor cover on the screen, it needs to be within the sweep of the windscreen wipers to avoid problems with rain blocking the view

I have a Nextbase 512G and it is excellent. They have brought out an even better, updated version, the Nextbase 512GW (£118 from Amazon).
This is a short clip from mine.

You can even buy a camera that looks back as well as forward, but I have no experience of them.

That's the one that I would go for.  It will allow you to attach a rear camera to it at a later date.

Or take a look at the Nextbase DUO HD Dash Cam which gives you both forward and rear facing from the start.

These are jolly good answers so thanks. Just one thing is the Duo HD as good as the 512GW? Same unit?

I have a couple of Nextbase 402G HD cameras fitted 1 front & 1 rear, probably around 3 years old now and they are excellent.
I would say, don't be tempted to buy on price alone and don't buy anything other than Full HD.
If you can't read a number plate at more than a few metres then they are next to useless.

Be careful of the 512Gw with rear camera as both cameras share the same memory and the definition suffers, you can get the matching rear camera for about 50 notes. I have 512GW but I decided the loss of front definition ( drops from 1440 quad at 30fps down to 1080 ) was not good, so have not got the rear camera.

So no rear view. What size SD card?
Title: Re: Best Camera.
Post by: Jocko on October 21, 2018, 10:26:48 PM
I use a 32 GB SD card.

I don't really feel there is a need for a rear view camera, unless a vehicle smacks you from behind then drives off without being identified. It would be nice to have, but not a necessity, and a bit of a nuisance on a hatch back!

I use a 32GB class 10 card that overwrites every 4 hours of use, the files sizes are large on 1440 quad at 30 fps ( about 600MB for a 3 minute clip and at the same it also records a 70MB 'low resolution' clip suitable for viewing on a smartphone etc.) ,  I have read that 512GW will take up to 128GB memory card.

So if I don’t go for an integrated rear view camera I have the choice of the Nextbase DUO HD. Does this also revert to 1040 if the rear is connected?

I’ll stick with 4hrs recording I think.

My camera records at 1080p. 30 frames per second and at 140 degree wide angle view. This is perfectly adequate for a dash cam, whose footage you probable will never use. You can comfortably read number plates, but that comes down more to the lens resolution than the recording.

I usually browse Amazon to get reviews and find that if I analyse the low scores to remove the ones that are just uninformed or 'didn't like the colour' types I get a fairly good idea of the actual feel. I see for these devices there are a lot on the market and was looking for the more discreet versions. Of course one has to remove it when parked otherwise the car is a target for smashed window. Should I worry?

Not a lot of point. It is designed to start recording if your car is bumped while parked. A lot of good that will do if it is in your glove box. Mind you, you know your own area best!

Jocko you certainly do 'Hot off the press'! Thanks for your instant replies. I am insuring with SAGA but has any one a view on stating a camera is being used? Going to a comparison site though for this one. At least I am in an 'A' post code. Currently I pay 225 quid for Ins and that includes about 112 for full recovery (although I wonder if I need it for a 18 reg vehicle and only 1000 miles). Is this good? i think so. I am 70+.

Hold on Joko, is that for recover Home? Although I have often wondered about getting it home as now I would not be able to do my own repair so maybe take to nearest dealer and insure for a replacement. Getting old and having to thinks about not being long way from home is definitely a PITA). Btw SAGA recovery has always worked well on the two occasions I needed it.

If they cannot get you repaired they will recover you to home, or to garage of your choice or even onward to your destination. In fact, to any single destination in the UK.
I also have At Home, so if I go out to my car one morning, and it won't start, they come out and do whatever is required. I have only called them out once, recently, and that was to a failed battery. The guy fitted a new battery for me (had to pay for that) and that was me going.

One thing to bear in mind there are limitations where you can position a dashcam and still be legal.

The body of the camera is not much more than about 30 mm deep so if you mount it at the top of the wiper arc, and on the passenger side of the mirror, it doesn't intrude. This is my set up.

The rear of the camera shows a digital GPS speedometer and compass, on the model I have. The GPS speedometer is excellent.

The MK3 has the large sensor pod around the mirror area, while your installation looks good it would not work on the newer car.

I appreciate that. It would have to be further over to the passenger side, but it still only needs to encroach the lens width into the swept area.

The attached photo shows the setup in my Mk3. The disc is glued to the mesh area and I have made up the bracket to bring the Camera further forward so the the view is not obscured by the senor pod. Also it does not obscure the passengers view too much.

54.3 mpg is the average over my entire ownership of the car. That is almost two and a half years, just over 20,000 miles and 59 fuel ups. That is a calculated figure, not numbers from the dashboard "fibometer".
I input my top ups at a couple of fuel sites, online. www.spritmonitor.de (http://www.spritmonitor.de) and http://www.fuelly.com (http://www.fuelly.com)

My best ever fuel figure for a top up is 70.9 mpg, and the worst 46 mpg. I have a ScanGauge E fitted to the car and it gives me a load of info, including instantaneous mpg (not something fitted to the Mk 1 Jazz), which I use to hone my mpg figures.

It's a challenge I will take up. I hope there is a 'vacuum gage' as on my Micra. I use this to gage 'light throttle'. Btw, just a little joke in there. Not disagreeing with you.

No, it's fine. I am proud of my mpg figures and try my hardest to keep them up. Mainly through anticipation and trying to avoid having to use my brakes. Why use petrol to generate heat when you could use it to go miles!

What has fuel consumption got to do with, Best Camera.???

I am sorry to hear that you have lost the plot, we are discussing aspects of the MK3 Jazz. Apart from the people talking about MK1 fuel consumption.

Surely dashcams should be a General topic anyway - not really specific to any model.

Just looked at another of your posts-- if you buy a Approved Honda  you should get the balance of Honda Happiness or whatever they call it nowadays-- this includes full roadside recovery etc, so you won't need the recovery on your Saga Insurance. There you go, saved you £112  already !

There are two plots here. I like a challenge!

I agree that the dash cam subject is mainly generic but there are factors only fleshed out by someone else who has actually installed e.g. the hashed area in the front screens in some vehicles where one cannot ain a camera and si=o needs to be further obstructing the passenger view.

Comment welcome but please don't start a new subject. I might get ostracised!

I had a front and back dash cam when I first got the car. Got fed up of it eventually though as once it filled the card it stopped recording. Definitely a bug in the software but I decided it wasn't really offering anything I needed anyway.

Something that many dash cam users seem to forget is the camera is monitoring their own driving standards. Many YouTube clips demonstrate the appaling driving of the car with the camera.

In fact the police can use your camera recording as evidence against you.

I think it is useful in making people aware of their own driving and encouraging them to be more safe.

Monitoring you language as well if you have the sound turned on  :o  By habit I tend to click the 'lock video clip' button after I go past a speed camera van - if a ticket comes my way they can then argue with the GPS speed on the Nextbase - the clip also shows GPS position and their camera van ( Dashcam speed is spot on with the speed shown on Garmin Satnav ).

Some real treasure footage of Russian and Eastern European drivers on internet - India also good for a laugh.  This Russian one looks like a bit of a testosterone / alcohol fueled free-for-all.

Watched the video, thanks. A good lesson for all to watch the road like a hawk as your own survival depends upon it. Pity about the other morons who happen to be allowed to drive though. I am constantly amazed at people overtaking (just because it's in front) with kids in the back. Only yesterday a 4x4 coming towards swerved in front of us and then recovered. The moron was on his mobile.

Get our new Jazz EX next week. Hope I don't regret paying the extra dosh for it.

Not decided which camera yet. Maybe best to look at some in Curries and get the car first?
