Title: EPS Indicator occasionally appearing on dash
Post by: UKjim on August 07, 2023, 06:35:13 PM
The EPS indicator (steering wheel with exclamation mark) occasionally flashes on the dashboard for a split second whilst driving, any idea why this maybe?

Have you looked in the manual?

I have, states comes on after turning key and then goes off, if it comes on and stays on, a fault with the EPS, nothing about flashing on for a split second maybe every 2 weeks or so

This could be an indication of the battery condition. A low battery may affect the EPS first as it draws a lot of current.

I thought that but it’s a fairly new battery (6 months) and it flashed on today on the Motorway during a 50 mile drive so was definitely fully charged.

P.562 of the online manual:
"If the Electric Power Steering (EPS) System Indicator Comes On
■ Reasons for the indicator to come on
    • Comes on when there is a problem with EPS system.
    • If you depress the accelerator pedal repeatedly to increase the engine speed while the engine is idling,
the indicator comes on, and sometimes the steering wheel becomes harder to operate.
■ What to do when the indicator comes on
Stop the vehicle in a safe place and restart the engine.
If the indicator comes on and stays on, immediately have your vehicle inspected by a dealer"

The implication seems to be that an occasional flash on/off isn't anything to worry about, but if it stays on then get it looked at.

Yes that’s the conclusion I came to after reading the section of the manual you posted.

Other manufacturers’ owner manuals I’ve looked at online actually state to ignore the light if it does not stay on. Doubt it will be a fault, car has covered less than 5k miles.

It might blip when there’s a heavy draw on the battery and the EPS system thinks it might be impacted? Probably measuring current requirements too frequently rather than averaging over a period of time which would smooth out the blip, if you see what I mean. Just a theory based on years of software development.
