where does the green dot go on tyres? valve or opposite?
« on: May 11, 2013, 12:32:32 PM »
I've had 4 new tyres and noticed the green dot is in different places regards the valve, does it matter or am i too pedantic?

I have been told the dot marks the heaviest part and should go opposite the valve, however I recently had 2 new tyres fitted, one dot opposite valve, other one not, so who knows? I haven't noticed any ill effects, so have left it as it is !

In this country, it tells the (inexperienced) tyre fitter which side of the tyre faces the outside.  Continental Tyres have a red dot, just to be different.

Outside is printed on the tyre, but if your English is poor or not your home language (very common)...

Excellent, thanks, it makes sense that all 4 tyres have their dot in a different place! There is a green dot on the inside and the word " outside" for them that can read!  ::) ta, Dave

The balancing machine will in any case smooth out any irregularities in tyre compound thickness. up to a point.  There was an article in a motoring journal a few years back complaining about the non-circular shape of tyres,  Some well-known brands had over 1mm difference between the smallest diameter and the largest.

doesn't fully answer your question but:

Those dots can denote high and low points on the tyre.

I've seen cars with these but never thought about it, if they are directional then obviously you need two of each thanks for that, something to watch for in future, cheers, Dave
