Steering wheel coating issue
« on: June 01, 2015, 12:16:36 PM »
Hi

I have a 2009 1.4i ES Manual which I bought from new. The outer coating on the steering wheel is coming off, yet mileage is average for year. I do not wear any rings and drive with clean hands!

Has anyone else come across this issue, please? Any suggestions how best to solve, please?

I haven't had the problem, but I fitted a leather cover to my steering wheel  as in the picture. Not as nice as a proper leather wheel , but a lot cheaper, and feels nicer than the original.

Hi Bill ericay

Thanks for your reply and the photo. Looks pretty good. Please may I ask where you bought the leather cover from and the price?

This is what I bought http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Italian-Leather-Steering-Wheel-Cover-HONDA-/310402038982?ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:GB:3160
I had to trim the cover where it goes round the spokes, and used some strong thread instead of the supplied one to stitch it on, and it took ages to stitch on, took about 3 attempts of giving up and starting again before I got it somewhere near right .I wouldn't fancy doing it again !
You can also get covers which require strong muscles and brute force to slip on without stitching if you like that sort of thing.
I think it cost about £12  including postage 2 years ago.
Hope this helps, perhaps other forum members will have other ideas to help you.

Hi,
At the beginning of last month we bought a 2010 1.4 Si to replace our 121,000 mile 04 SE.
We looked at a number of Jazz's around that year and quite a few had worn steering wheels. The dealer we bought it off (Nissan main dealer- it had been PX'd for a Qashqai) got it repaired by a mobile paint\wheel specialist. To be fair its an amazing repair as we can only just see it as we know it was there before. So it might be worth trying to find somebody locally who can do it. Certainly cheaper than buying a replacement leather wheel for circa £200!

Good luck

I've had mine for over 6 years now and theres not any wear on the steering wheel at all.

I dont understand how people cause wear on the steering wheel though

The coating on my steering wheel started to deteriorate at the top of the wheel, which I thought was unusual as I thought it would go at the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock areas as thats generally where the pupils have their sweaty palms on test day. So I am guessing that the sunlight through the windscreen is a contributing factor, so to save the rest of the wheel I have also fitted a steering wheel cover, but gone for a £8 Halfords job, stretch and fit, it makes the wheel a bit chunkier, but I like that  :D.

It's quite simple. It's "Karate Kid" steering: that is, using one hand and wax on, wax off.  :P

The coating on my steering wheel started to deteriorate at the top of the wheel....So I am guessing that the sunlight through the windscreen is a contributing factor.

I've got a 38 year-old Citroen and the wheel was fine up until recently as it spent most of its life garaged. Unfortunately it has spent its recent years outside and now the 12 o'clock portion of the foam/covering is starting to swell and break up. So it'll be the sunlight/UV/heat/cold taking its toll.

I would never have thought about approaching someone who refurbishes alloys to repair steering wheels!

Please don't laugh too much, but I was quoted £697 for replacing the steering wheel! Furthermore, I was told that this was a good will gesture as the normal price is well over £700. Ok, you can laugh now!

That is very interesting and valid evidence. Sounds to me that the steering wheel cover probably needs more UV stabiliser.

Thanks

Looks very reasonable price, but they appear not to post out of US. The fitting instructions are clear and make it sound easy to fit. These could prove useful if you can obtain one elsewhere.

TK max always seems to have steering gloves cheap.

Minicab drivers always seem to have a thick steering wheel glove fitted.

Blimey, I'd just get down a scrap yard and do an exchange. Where I used to go used to ask what you wanted to pay, on second thoughts scrap that if you don't know what to do, ask them to take wheel off and exchange for you, whatever they say half it then add a bit. Scrap yard lads will do anything for a quid quid or two.
