Oil Problems
« on: September 10, 2014, 10:04:37 PM »
Hi Guys

2004 Honda Jazz 1.4 SE Sport
Miles 30000 miles from new.

I have been doing the service since new. The problem is that I have never checked the oil. What I do is jack up the car and put it on axle stands, change the filter and let every drop drain out. Then I just pour in 3.6 litres like the owner manual states.

I have done this for the past 9  year and not a problem, the low oil pressure light has never come on. Today I serviced the car and checked the oil after running and Turning it off, then waiting 8 minutes and checked the oil, it was below the lower mark. The I topped it up and added more oil about 800-1000ml. It still was below the lower mark.

I will check it tomorrow morning first cold then running then engine.

So in total I have put 4.2 to 4.4 litres and the oil is still below the mark. Cannot find any leaks.

Have I been filling the oil incorrectly?
When should I check the oil? Cold or warm? Or both.
Have I damaged the Engine?

I use Castrol edge 0-30.

Check the oil at 9pm and 10.40pm and still below the lower mark.
Thanks
How

Sounds odd, that is a lot of oil you have had to put in. My 1.4 used to take approx. 3.5 litres of oil plus the molyslip at oil change c/w a new filter. It would always come up to level with that.
If you cannot find a leak, my thought is - are you certain it is the correct filter? But then, even a larger, more dense filter would be hard pressed to take an extra litre of oil. 2l can not a 4l can?
Edge 0-30 is good oil. I suppose all you can do is drain again, new filter, stick the oil back and see what happens.
Best of luck.

I'm using the Bosch filter(eurocarparts) but now I do have 4 new Honda filters. The Bosch filter is slightly bigger.

I will check again the level in the morning cold and warm to see if there is any diffference. 0-30 is a very thin oil.
I will ring up Honda see what they say.

It say 3.6l including oil filter.
Maximum capacity 5.5l.

Have never put more than about 3.8 litres in,  I did once over-tighten a filter and it leaked quite badly though.

car should be level when you check level,  doesn't matter if oil is hot or cold when you check as long as you allow 5 to10 minutes after engine has stopped to allow all oil to run back to sump.

Edge 0W-30 is very thin oil (and expensive),  Honda recommend 5W-30 or 10W-40 in UK.

Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

Looking in my Honda owners manual it states for '0W-30 oil is formulated to help improve fuel economy'

This might be a daft suggestion, but could there be a problem with the oil dip stick (too short?), or the guide tube is preventing the dip stick from being fully inserted?

Bill888 I was thinking the same thing, what I will do is measure the metal part of the dip stick, can someone tell their dip stick size.

2004 dip stick appears to have same honda part number as my 2007 model.

Metal part is about 32.6-32.7cm

Thanks bill888, I have checked as well and it's the same as yours. I have checked the oil again I think I may have filled it over or dead on the the upper level, as the 0-30w is so thin it's had to read, but today I took out 500ml and it look like it's bang in the middle now.

But it's still hard to read and there is still a think blob of oil on the bottom of the dipstick. That blob is what confused me. Seems all o.k now.

Thank guys.
